Gee, I don’t know who is singing Lanka’s time honored, beautiful song “Danno Buddunge” here, but it does sound like a trained Opera singer from abroad, having a yowling cat stuffed in the mouth, shivering in the cold …… !

The song is supposed to convey the Compassion and Wisdom of the Buddha, and is sung usually in the softest way to convey that feeling. ….

    O tempora !

  2. sena Says:

    Luckily I was not eating

  3. Lorenzo Says:

    I DISAGREE.

The singer is Soprano Kishani Jayasinghe. She is a qualified OPERA singer.

The ONLY difference is she signs the GREAT SONG in OPERA style. The only style she is qualified to sing.

There is nothing wrong in that. There is NO insult to the song. I think it is AMAZING a local singer has qualified as an opera singer, comes back to SL and does something for SL with her ONLY talent.

Buddha accepted THANAM from ANYONE and I’m sure this is sweet music.

Don’t forget OPERA singing has many DEVOTIONAL and RELIGIOUS songs.

The younger generation is FAST INTERNATIONALIZING everything. IF SINGHALA is to survive it has to ADAPT to this internationalization. Otherwise youngsters will LEAVE Singhala behind and totally take up other cultures.

Easy for me to say but I can understand the anger of SINGHALA people of the old generations. This is nothing more than the GENERATION GAP.

As hundreds of thousands of Tamils and Muslims I listen to SINGHALA songs – my ONLY connection to the SL culture. I find the new trend of WESTERNIZING. Popular songs have been westernized and regained popularity among youngsters.

Change is hard. Not changing is extinction.

  4. Cerberus Says:

The song is essentially a song of devotion to the Lord Buddha. It has to be sung with a feeling from the Heart. Otherwise it does not touch the listener’s heart. However good the technique the song has to be a Heart to Heart communication. That is why it sounds so foreign. It sounds totally out of place in a Sinhala culture.

  5. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

FULLY AGREE WITH YOU LORENZO. THANKS FOR YOUR KIND UNDERSTANDING.

  6. Dham Says:

It is not foolish to “blow everything out of proportion” against a government.

What is this song ? It was a “Naatya (Nadagam) Song” by John De Silva. Buddhism does not encourage singing and dancing anyway and there was ZERO disrespect to ANYONE by singing it differently, which is common in modern world. We should actually encourage it.

It is natural that some people do not like changing the style. When Bhatiya and Santush completely made a pop song out of “Siri Sangabo ” ( from Joh De Silva as well) there was not much objections though.

    It is completely unacceptable for a journalist to use words “මද කිපී ලතෝනි දෙන බැලලියන් ගඩොල් බාගයකින් ගසා පන්නනු.. ” to make objections.

Instead , he should follow the very first words of the song which says ,
“those who know the Buddha Dhamma follows it by keeping the precepts “

  7. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

LORENZO !! THIS ARZ OLE HAS CALLED THIS LADY A **WILD BITHCH** IN THE SINHALA VERSION IN ADA DERANA.

VAL BALLIYEK AND LATHONI DENA BALILIYAN HAS TWO DIFFERENT MEANINGS ALTOGETHER.

HE CAME ON LANKA WEB PURPOSELY TO COVER THIS UP, BUT LANKA WEB READERS ARE NOT FOOLS. THEY ALSO READ ADA DERANA SINHALESE NEWS. HE IS FREE TO HAVE HIS VIEWS AND COMMENT. NOT USE BAD LANGUAGE.

HE OWES AN APOLOGY TO THIS LADY.

THANKS ONCE AGAIN LORENZO, FOR EXPLAINING THE TRUE SIDE TO THIS EPISODE.

  8. Dham Says:

Sorry for the mistake. Should read “It is foolish” not “not foolish”.

  9. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

THANKS DHAM FOR YOUR VERY UNDERSTANDING AND UN-PREDJUDICED COMMENTS.

  10. Lorenzo Says:

    Thank you SW and Dham.

When Buddha went seeking THANAM what IF a VEDDA gave him the ONLY FOOD Vedda considers respectable – A JUICY COW BEEF STEAK? Would Buddha REJECT it? NO!

As a devotee I give what I consider PRECIOUS to Jesus (or Buddha if a Buddhist). That’s the BEST I can give. It does NOT matter how others think of it.

The joy of praising Buddha comes in various styles. ALL are valid.

Soprano Kishani Jayasinghe gave her very best. She should be THANKED.

The disgusting comment (as I understand) from a journo should be condemned.

  11. Lorenzo Says:

    Our journalists don’t know ETIQUETTE.

Some of them HARASS MR. One of them asked about politics when MR went to MKDS’s funeral. MR blasted him and told him to learn the difference between a funeral and a wedding.

Anyone can become a journalist but not an opera singer.

Watch this remix of an old popular Singhala song (written by a Tamil – K Shanmugam) with a CELINE DION touch. BEAUTIFUL!!

Or this Vijeya’s popular song (again written by another Tamil) with a Beyonce touch.

Then listen to this great singing.

    Enjoy!

  12. Dham Says:

    Lorenzo,
This is not a devotional song.
This song is describes Anuradhapura , the Buddhist City ( except the very first lines which I roughly translated).
I will try to translate the rest.

Those who know the Buddha Dhamma
Practice it by being well disciplined

There are countless Bikkhus who kills defilements
Enlighten beings lighten up the sky

Like the heavens came on to the earth
This city embraces the Buddha Saasana
Because of the shadows of those Ahrahaths ( enlightened beings)
who travel in air using supernormal powers
    Even the sunlight is defeated

Maanel, Lotus and Olu ( our native flowers) flowers
Are floating on waters of numerous ponds
Plenty of beautiful fish in groups ( called Serus) swim in these ponds
Anuradhapura can be seen far (now)

I don’t know whether the following is true, but I found it on the web.

  13. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

VERY FEW PEOPLE UNDERSTAND AND APPRECIATE OPERA SINGING. IT CAN BE EQUATED TO CLASSICAL MUSIC AND THE NORMAL POP SINGING. TWO DIFFERENT STRAINS OF MUSIC. SO IF THIS JOURNALIST GUY HAS NOT HEARD OPERA SINGERS BEFORE, THAT MEANS HE HAS NOT HAD EXPOSURE TO WORLD MUSIC. IF HE HEARS THE HUNGARIAN RHAPSODY OPUS XXX, HE WILL MAKE A WILD COMMENT. THAT WAS THE REASON FOR HIS CRUDE REMARK. INSTEAD OF CORRECTING THE SITUATION ON ADA DERANA, HE TRIED A FAST ONE ON LANKA WEB. HIS DECEPTIVE STRATEGY, COMPLETELY EXPOSED HIMSELF.

  14. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

TO SOPRANO SINGER, KISHANI JAYASINGHE !!!

I AM VERY DISTURBED AT THE WILD COMMENTS MADE ON THE PRESENTATION OF YOUR SONG**DANNO BHUDHUNGE**, BOTH IN ADA DERANA SINHALESE, AND LANKA WEB IN ENGLISH. IT IS MY VIEW THAT MY AFORESAID FEELINGS, ARE SYMBOLIC OF MOST OF THE WEB READERS.

MANY CERTAINLY APPRECIATE, YOUR STYLE OF OPERA TYPE SINGING, WHICH IS CONSISTENT WITH YOUR VOICE AND TRAINING. AT SOPRANO LEVEL. PLEASE CONTINUE TO SING WHATEVER SONG IN YOUR OPERA STYLE. YOU CAN GROW DOLLAR TREES IN COUNTRIES LIKE UK, USA JAPAN RUSSIA AND ALSO IN GERMANY. HIRE A MANAGER TO MARKET YOUR TALENT, INTERNATIONALLY. IAM SURE THAT, THAT MUST BE YOUR DREAM

PLEASE ACCEPT OUR COLLECTIVE APOLOGIES. I DO BELIEVE THAT THE JOURNALIST CONCERENED TOO WILL SINCERELY APOLOGISE FOR THE DIATRIBE. YOUR TALENT DOES NOT STOP THERE, ALL FIVE STAR HOTELS WILL ENGAGE YO. MARK MY WORDS. BASED ON APOLOGIES ARE ACCEPTED, GOO LUCK TO YOU INYOUR SINGING PROFESSION……….SINCERE SUSANTHA.

  15. NAK Says:

She should have sung “Namo Namo Matha” that way.

    what say u Lorenzo?

  16. Ramanie Says:

There is nothing wrong in Kishani Jayasinghe singing a song in the Western tradition- but she chose (or someone chose for her) the wrong song, the wrong occasion! It is a song sung in the Sinhala tradition; at this very juncture, this particular song being ‘converted’ to the Western tradition is another slap in the face of the Sinhala Buddhists who are hurting so badly. And this rendition comes straight after the bastardisation of our National Anthem! It is the wrong occasion! The wrong song Kishani! It is the last straw for the angry Sinhala Buddhists whose existence is being wiped out of Sri Lanka by the Yamapalanaya bastards! Sinhala Buddhist people have every right to be angry!

  17. Susantha Wijesinghe Says:

RAMANIE !! SOMEBODY CHOSE HER…..FOR THE WRONG OCCASION……WITH THE WRONG SONG.

  18. Lorenzo Says:

    Ramanie,

    IF SO why blame HER?

I DOUBT it has hurt Singhalese. In youtube and facebook the song has MORE LIKES than DISLIKES. NO protests. NOT A SINGLE politician saying its bad. NO prelate has said it is bad. Politicians are instead cracking coconuts for NOT INVITING them for the independence day celebrations.

“It is a song sung in the Sinhala tradition”

The SAME SONG was sung in a DIFFERENT WESTERN TRADITION (like a Christian hymn) by SOUL SOUNDS (I think the CHOIR of HFC convent Bamba) at the world choir championship and won a medal. Why no one condemned it?

The SAME SONG is sung by SIDATH WETTAMUNI with English like pronounciation in another western tradition. Why no one condemned that?

Both these are available for your listening pleasure in youtube.

But IF this arouses Buddhists to go against this ENDIAN govt. then it is good.

    NAK,

I think the CONSTITUTION clearly says the MUSIC NOTES how the SL national anthem MUST be sung. It cannot be sung anyother way.

    ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

I think this is another DISTRACTION like the bra controversy to take people’s attention away from important issues.

  19. Fran Diaz Says:

Ms Jayasinghe is probably not a Buddhist ?

Anyway, this version of the song will never be popular …. it sounds too foreign and does not capture the FEELING behind the words.

  20. Fran Diaz Says:

    Dham,

In the translation of the song to English, I think ‘Seru’ is a black color water bird, and not a fish. Perhaps someone else can tell us more or correct me if I am wrong.

  21. Lorenzo Says:

    Fran,

This is the beauty of the INTERNET!

In the opera version English subtitles are given.

    Dham’s overall translation comes close.

The LYRICS are out of this world. GO BEYOND the lyrics and see what the WHOLE tries to say. Whoever composed it did very well to MARRY the Buddha Dhamma, nature and Anuradhapura. It shows how the 3 coexisted in Anuradhapura (man, dhamma and nature) and the religious 3 (Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha). EXCEPTIONAL!

The old song is back in the limelight thanks to the singing. NO bad publicity!! Good.

  22. Dham Says:

    Fran,
I am a Colombo boy. My wife is a village girl who used to work in paddy fie;ds when young. I asked her without telling what you mentioned and her answer matched exactly to what you said. So, many thanks and my apologies to all !

I did sinhala/hundustan music ( instrument play) as a O/L subject althogh I did science.
Mastero Sarath Dsanayake was our teacher during O/L.
This song is close to my heart.
We had an uncle who played violin and sang athis at the same time. His wife ( my mother’s older siter by 20 years) comes from a musical family too. Lionel Ranwala was mu uncle , his mother had an extremely beautiful voice and often sanp Nadagam songs and yhis one was very popular.
Anyway , I never felt hurt hearing the opera versin and I thought it is sung beautifully.

  23. Dham Says:

    Sorry for numerous spelling mistakes.

  24. Fran Diaz Says:

    Dham,

    Thanks for info and confirmation.
Enjoy the song, whatever way !
    Regards to your wife.

    ——

    Lorenzo,

You are right. Whoever who composed it, did it right ! Thanks for your view there !
