Who would think that cow urine (Gau Mutra) would be sold openly in London? It has been detected by the UK’s Food Standards Agency and gone viral in the UK media. According to the European Union Regulations, farm animal products such as urine and faeces are forbidden to enter the food chain, but in some shops in London several bottles of cow urine were detected next to food items. Hindus use cow urine in certain religious ceremonies while some drink it for health reasons

It becomes a different kettle of fish when it comes to human urine, as modern biochemists do not take the stigma attached to it seriously when they have discovered many beneficial properties in urine. The topic has become so popular that it has been discussed on international seminars under the topic of ‘ Uropathy’.

Dr. Mass R. Usuf, Vice President of the National Association of Homeopaths and affiliates and Sri Lanka’s Coordinator for Natural Healthcare Worldwide (Switzerland), says urine is the best medicine for human body to restore and maintain health!

His arguments take the enquirer back many centuries. Any person will shudder with utter revulsion at the very suggestion of drinking urine, but Dr. Usuf mentions Damar Tantra (an ancient Sanskrit work) as a typical example where Lord Shiva explained to his divine consort, Goddess Parvati, the benefits of urine therapy (107 Solokas-mantras). He then refers to the Christian Old Testament which states: “Drink waters out of thine own cistern” (Proverb 5-15). He says Prophet Mohamed ordered some people of the UKL and Uraynah tribe to drink camel urine when they fell ill (Medicine of the Prophet – page 55). Lankan Vedamahattayas have made use of urine to treat various illnesses including superficial and serious third degree burns as it retards harmful microbial activity by providing a sterile surface on burnt areas against infection, thus, facilitating healthy tissue proliferation. It is also widely known that snakebites are treated with urine.

Drugs such as Premarin, an estrogen medication used as a Hormone Replacement Therapy contains a urine component; it consists of conjugated estrogens isolated from the urine of pregnant mares. Urokinase, used as a clot buster during cardiac emergencies was originally isolated from human urine.

Dr. Morris Mezel, Chief Surgeon of Edgewater Hospital, Chicago thinks “There is no substance more efficacious than Urokinase to treat heart disease“. Dr. Maganbhai Salaria of Ahmedabad injects patients with their own urine when preparing them for various surgeries with the firm belief that urine prevents post-surgical complications and maintains the efficiency of the heart. Dr. Hamao, Professor, Medical University of Kyoto, Japan has isolated a substance from human urine, which is beneficial in the treatment of cancer (The Illustrated Weekly of India, 26 August, 1973).

Is Urine Poisonous

Urine is a ‘waste product’ thus; it could poison the human body. Dr. Usuf totally disagrees and states on the contrary that it is the “purest liquid in the world” and requests any disbeliever to examine urine under the microscope to find out what strong detoxifying properties it contains. “Urine per se does not have pathogens,” he says, but “it can be contaminated with bacteria in the urinary tract/bladder. If it is something filthy and harmful, will it be possible to store it within one’s body?” argues Dr. Usuf. “It is a filtrate of blood chockfull of pre-digested super nutrients – only the excess body fluid,” he asserts.

 He openly believes in the theory that drinking urine keeps the body constantly supplied with nutrients such as enzymes, hormones, salts, vitamins, natural steroids, trace minerals etc., which the human body may lack at times owning to metabolic dysfunction. It is much more powerful than swallowing artificial vitamin pills – some of which are not body friendly and sometimes subject to mal-absorption. The outflow and ingestion of urine therefore seems to assure continuous good health.

For youthful looks his advice is to have ‘a massage with four day old stale urine, let it dry for about 10 minutes before washing without using soap. In case of lacerations his advice is to dip a piece of cotton in urine and squeeze some drops over the wound thrice a day. In no time the wound would heal sans complications, he assures.

If this is such a miracle and a medicinal drink and helps people to maintain their health, why hasn’t it caught up with masses at large throughout the world? Surely people will not want to go to doctors and undergo surgery etc., if they can look after their health by just drinking urine? I put a direct question to him.

His answer was simple. “Even centuries back people must have looked at urine as something very obnoxious and would look at a man drinking it with revulsion. A man can get easily ostracised for drinking urine. If a therapeutic system is harmful surely there will be reports about such harm over a period of ten thousand years!! Even modern day investigations have not uttered a ‘factual’ sound where Uropathy is concerned. The former Indian Prime Minister Morarji Desai was a firm believer in drinking his own urine“.

It appears that commercialised modern Medicare worshipped by the new generation has replaced the wisdom, possessed by people by instinct two centuries ago predominantly in Eastern cultures. It is believed that native Ayurvedic practitioners of yore have taken the many secrets of Uropathy with them to the grave or retirement, when the commercialised modern Medicare overwhelmed them.

Curing of a diabetic patient with an infected leg wound at amputation stage with the help of Uropathy stands as a self-certification for Dr. Usuf. Presently he is treating another diabetic patient from Kalutara South, with the identical infected type wound on his leg, who might have ended up having to go through an amputation, but to the delight of the patient the wound is healing fast.
