The enemy is at our door: An Appeal to World Buddhists to save Buddhist Sri Lanka

The destruction of the Salawa ammunition factory is in reality a blessing in disguise. The fire struck the heart of our armed forces destroying items meant to protect the nation and its people. The armed forces are one of the key protectors of our country since ancient times. They have shed blood to defend the nation and protect Buddhism. The armed forces have now been weakened. Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage has also become vulnerable to and target of both institutionalized Christianity and Islam as can be seen by the incursions both groups are adopting to subtly attempt to dislodge and replace the historical place due to Sinhala Buddhists with theirs creating a new history altogether. Therefore, sites like Dalada Maligawa, Sri Maha Bodhiya (both places attacked by LTTE terrorists previously) can be subject to future attacks & annihilation. Protecting the remaining temples, Buddhist literature, artefacts etc is the national duty of all and it is timely that we collectively or individually devise ways and strategies to meet the challenges attempting to erase our past. Today it is Sri Lanka, tomorrow it could be a fellow Buddhist nation. The Buddhist world has crumbled with only a handful of Theravada Buddhist nations grappling to hold their heritage space while bizarre theories are emerging to deny this right. The nations that were once Buddhist have removed all or are removing every bit of evidence that denote their true identity.

With the exception of Buddhism all other religions have been destructive.”

The quest is simple enough to understand. The objective is to wipe out a nation’s history, heritage, culture and values that have lasted over 2600 years and replace with imposed values, cultures of immigrants. The plot is to intrinsically remove the association the Sinhala Buddhists have to defend the nation unleashing the satanic forces to realize their historical objectives. Those proposing changes ignore that Buddhism is not even accepted as a religion in the West and thus have no rights.

We are being cornered from every angle – politically, via commerce and trade, all modes of communication, diplomatic channels, international agencies, relief/aid organizations, charities all with religious innuendos ‘Christian relief agencies’ ‘Christian aid’, ‘Christian values’ and the promotion of a one world religion, one world education is a subtle means to removing the hold and identity that the Dharmic faiths have and once that is done those in the mantle controlling all spheres of influence in the world will find it easier to spread their faith. The multicultural-multifaith exercise is simply a stop-gap until the Dharmic faiths have been removed legally, from history, from school texts and from the minds of those who follow the faith. Thus, these new proposals are with the long term intent to dislodge the history & heritage we are grappling to protect while weakening those trying to protect them.

The Armed Forces are targeted for ‘reformation’ the Sinhala Buddhist majority are hit by taxes burdening them economically leaving them defenseless. The Buddhist monks are being gagged or their weaknesses have been tapped. The media and the legal fraternity apart from a noteworthy handful who came to defend the nation, function as the sepoys and lascoreens that worked with the enemy.

The incursions on Buddhist space are never highlighted, media hardly gives print space to the view of the majority 75% and if it does it will either give preference to the Sinhala Christian/Catholic view or voice views of name-sake Buddhists, electronic media doesn’t find sensationalism in taking up the Buddhist cause, the international agencies will reluctantly release a statement when damage is done. When the damage is done, it doesn’t really matter who did it even if investigated, the objective has been achieved. The damage to historical Dambulla caves is one such example and the manner all Buddhist items in Maldives museum have been dashed to the ground and destroyed is another. The easy excuse is to brush the crime on treasure hunters. Not a single editorial was seen championing the vendetta against Buddhism (local and foreign news) though they were quick to create headlines ‘Terrorists in Robes’ whenever Buddhists reacted – the actions that cause the reactions were swept under the carpet and a media blanket entailed the other version kept out of mainstream news. The customary messages of sympathy for the Buddhist loss will come pouring in most of them with hidden glee as the objective was won!

Similarly not a single editorial raised objection to the proposal to remove Buddhism’s foremost place from the present constitution. Not a single article was allowed to go to print on the subject. Instead the news gave enough space for arguments that promoted doing away with Buddhism. Over 70% of the Sinhala Buddhist voice has been purposely drowned. This show clearly that the media is in the hands of and in control of Christian-owned parties peddling the Christianization of Asia project. The Press Commission Report of 1964 gives ample evidence to showcase this.

We have forgotten that the Kandyan Convention of 1815 would not have been signed if the British had not agreed to Clause 5 giving Buddhism its due place. That the British did not mean to uphold its promise and the manner in which the British inspite of all their righteous talks went about subjugating Buddhism can be seen by the manner Buddhism has become diluted,

We all know what happened to the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan

What happened to Nalanda can happen to Sri Lanka.

The greatest Crime islam committed in its whole history was the destruction of Nalanda, the world’s first University the seat of learning and wisdom, the birthplace of Wisdom and Philosophy the womb of Buddhism the fruit of culture and progressive thought and the pride of mankind east or west. http://hlaoo1980.blogspot.com/2013/07/nalanda-muslim-demolished-buddhist.html

What happened to the Buddhist temples in Bangladesh can happen in Sri Lanka

In 2012 Muslims in Bangladesh attacked Buddhists – 23 Buddhist temples were burnt and destroyed, over 50 Buddha Statues were destroyed, 25 Buddhist monks were beaten, over 150 Buddhist homes were burnt to the ground.

Martin Niemoller’s poem came to mind and with apologies it has been reformatted to suit present conditions. We find only a handful of people standing up against the wrongs taking place – the country must always come first, the subversion of our sovereignty, the humiliations to our armed forces and the Buddhist monks that have been a pivotal part of our history, laws and constitutions are being changed with the calculated intent to fulfil agendas of foreign powers and just as a handful of sepoys and lascoreens sided with the enemy we see the repetition taking place. Even Buddhism has been infiltrated with non-Buddhist ideologies creeping in and being promoted as Buddhism. These incursions must all be recorded and denounced publicly.

To borrow a phrase from Attorney Senaka Weeraratna used for Sinhala Buddhists who do not wish to take a stand let them realize that functioning as ‘ostrich Buddhists’ we are only helping fulfil the historical objective taking shape since 1505 and even earlier by the Dravidian invaders.

Are we to watch Sri Lanka turn into a South Korea, Maldives or Philippines?

It is time the Buddhist associations/organizations here and abroad unite and see how best to face these challenges, bring out these challenges to the open, involve fellow Buddhist nations who will also face the same incursions with time. Unless all Buddhists join to protect Buddhism we are unlikely to even have a place in any museum! Iconoclasm cannot wipe out ancient marvels that today’s engineers cannot even dream of constructing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BOmeJyrBR8&spfreload=10

Fellow Buddhist nations and Buddhists must come to help us. Similarly, we must also help highlight the plight of fellow Buddhists and Buddhism in other parts of the world too. The envoys of Buddhist nations must take special diplomatic interest.

First they came for Our Soldiers, and I did not speak out

Because I was not a Soldier

Then they came for the Buddhist priests, and I did not speak out

Because I was not a Buddhist priest

Then they came for the Buddhists, and I did not speak out

Because I was not a Buddhist

Then they came for me….and there was no one left to speak for me.

I would suggest that India is also out to destroy Buddhism in the island by supporting the LTTE separatist terrorists in their aim to set up a separate state comprising over 28% land area, over 66% coastline and over 55% of our ocean. It is very interesting that India is a Hindu country. Please also note that Mauritius, a Hindu country, also sided with India. Also note that evangelical Christian funded by millions of US dollars from the US are converting far easterners and Sri Lankans etc.to Christianity.

However, the biggest threat to Sri Lanka Buddhists are we ourselves. Why do I say that? Considering the thirty years of war and the evil UNP Government of 1977-1994, I think over 800,000 to 1 million Sinhala Buddhists have relocated permanently to countries such as Australia, Canada, UK, Europe, New Zealand , US etc. (I am not talking about Sri Lankans working temporarily in the Middle East or Korea). It is fashionable to relocate and live in Australia, US, Canada etc. and stupid Sinhala Buddhists think that it is what a Westernised and fashionable person should do. However this massive brain drain of over 800,000 to 1 million Sinhala Buddhists from Sri Lanka relocating to live permanently in other countries is a great loss to Sri Lanka. If we are even remotely patriotic we should live in our own motherland, Sri Lanka and help it as much as it can, thought good and hard times both. The fact that we are running after material gains and a Western lifestyle and not living in Sri Lanka itself and helping Sri Lanka develop shows how unpatriotic Sri Lankan Buddhists have become and are. This brain drain is I think the biggest threat to Sinhala Buddhists today. Young Sinhala Buddhists should be encouraged to live in Sri Lanka itself and work towards making Sri Lanka a great place to live. there are many Sinhala Buddhists who misuse the free education provided, get their degrees totally free and then leave the country for good, all the while, the Sri Lankan taxpayer has paid for then to get this free education, their degrees, vocational training for free in Sri Lanka. This must be stopped through legislation which should make it compulsory for those who acquire a free education is Sri Lanka to live in work towards Sri Lanka’s development or if they are going abroad for good, to pay back all the money that was spent for their education to the Government of Sri Lanka. There should be new legislation brought in to make this happen.

Catholic run UNPatriotic party doing irreparable damage to Buddhism. They promote tamils, mussies and
catholics and doing everyting to destroy Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Catholic traitor chief pol pot ponil
wickramasinhalakiller spearheading the charge. He got john mara etc. for the backup. Remember how
he gave half the country to his catholic buddy hitler pira(mala)paharan. Him and his party prolonged the war
for 30 years and got catholic tigers of tamil drealam to kill 100,000+ Buddhists, including Buddhist monks,
men, women, children and armed forces/police personnel. Still some traitor Sinhala modayas voted this
murderous gang believing their tom pachas.

They are driving nail after nail to Buddhist coffin merrily. Remember Soma Thero? Remember Buddhism gone
from school syllabus? Remember history gone from school curriculum? List goes on. But some traitor Sinhala
modayas can’t see these murderous, Buddhism-destroying gang.

Catholic-run traitor UNPatriotic party’s newest project to destroy Buddhism, Sinhalese and Sri Lanka is giving
crafty indians, red cross, red crescent to build houses in central province. To create a greater drealam of course
by connecting the upcountry to north and east. Same time helping to expand mussie empire in Sri Lanka.
red cross, red crescent, india building houses for Sinhalese? No chance in hell. Sinhala modayas asleep. So is
    maru sira aka vairapala sorrysena.

  4. Fran Diaz Says:

Life in Sri Lanka is not peaceful.
As long as I have known, Lanka has been having one upheaval after another.
Frankly, I do not blame Sinhala Buddhists for re-locating to more peaceful places outside on a permanent basis – sad to say, but true.

Colonisation, Cold Wars, Tamil Caste Wars leading to Separatists wars, internal conflicts through party politics, Laws not followed through (such as the 6-A), Laws enforced on Lanka under Duress accepted into the Constitution (13-A), etc., have destabilised the country in an unbelievable fashion. Lanka politicos also get enmeshed in foreign political & economic situation, to the detriment of the country.

A new Constitution is not needed. Simply remove the 13-A and enact the 6-A.

  5. nilwala Says:

Shenali’s plea for Unity among the World’s Buddhists will not be allowed to happen in the current ethos of an Agenda and Exceptionalism imposed via War.
As far as Sri Lanka is concerned while I agree with Fran. “Remove 13A and enact 6A” without meddling with the Constitution”….again, it will most likely not be allowed to happen for the very same reasons.

Many Buddhists seek to get away from the island at this time in Sri Lanka’s history in search of other climes where they “think” Peace exists. Ever since Independence, after a brief breather in which our people lived in Peace but in which many, near 90%, endured poverty and there was a marked disparity both economic and educational opportunities between the elites and the deprived, Revolution and Insurrection arose as a natural outcome.
With continued mismanagement by the political leaders, except for a brief respite in the immediate aftermath of the Eelam wars in 2009, that left a semblance of Peace, in-fighting has shattered it again with continuing political chaos, involving the rejection of a large section of the voting citizenship, that induces daily stress without an end in sight. The political leaders seem sadly out of touch and insensitive to what is happening to the society around them. Indeed one wonders whether the CHAOS is being deliberately contrived.

Principled persons shun participation in governance in Sri Lanka, although one must admit that this situation has become the norm in most democracies around the world. To survive the ugly electoral processes amidst the technological intrusions of TV, Hollywood/Bollywood fantasy, and cellphones, Facebook and Twitter needs special survival tools to counter the creation of “Stress-related Mental disorders” that are increasingly driving both individuals and communities into self-destructive behavior. “Survivors” seem to be those with a peculiar mindset of Driving Ambition and De-sensitization to what is being caused by their actions.

As for Sri Lankan Buddhists – they seek peace through geographic distance away from the intensity of conflict in the home country, or they seek haven through the Buddhas teachings via mental retreats into Meditation.

  6. Ananda-USA Says:

Forgive me, but I do not agree that Sinhala Buddhists are abandoning, or will abandon, their Motherland.

They are slowly assessing the situation. That pace of reassessment perhaps irritates and bothers those of us who worried about what is happening in Sri Lanka and the growing threat to its integrity and the security of its citizens.

But, don’t be fooled that the people are unaware; the storm of protest and dissatisfaction is gathering it’s might, and will soon boil over like a TSUNAMI.

Nothing that the Yamapalana government does will prevent that TSUNAMI from washing away all these self-appointed “SUDUSU” people away from power into the sea. Their days are numbered!

    Dakinno Dakithi; Nodakinno Mulawethi!

  8. Fran Diaz Says:

Agree with Nilwala on the points raised.
Mass negative psychology used on the people of Lanka through popular media, as was done to win the elections for the Heartless Trio.

Ananda, any uprising by the masses – I dare not think of such an event in Lanka, with Ranil as Exec PM.

Heartless Fascism is setting into so called Democracies ?

An over populated world of 8 Billion souls now – even good leaders seem unable to cope with the numbers and their needs ? There is an incredible lack of sensitivity and Heart from present day Lanka leaders …..
After WW II, and the death of nearly 80 million human beings from around the world, there was a brief period of peace till the Cold War set in.

It is infinitely kinder to give FREE birth control material to all adults who need that, rather than have wars to reduce numbers.

  9. Fran Diaz Says:

Climate Change will be the Teacher for an errant world.

  10. nilwala Says:

Ananda….I certainly hope that you are right, and that Buddhism will NOT be wiped out of Sri Lanka. But the trend is evident in the revival of the non-Buddhist religions through government protection especially in the environs of Colombo and in other urban areas that are the most prosperous. It is being masked by the many overt exhibitions of Buddhist rituals and TV stations and programs that seem to institutionalize the material aspects of Buddhism, abandoning the simplicity and purity of the Theravada path as was dpminant in Sri Lanka.

It seems to me that it is only a majority of the rural folk who might practice the culture and life style of the Middle Path today, but even they are being daily driven into the mainstream culture of wealth, competition and greed leading to rapid increase in criminal behavior as the ignorant get corrupted into following the fantasies and dreams spouted 24/7 via the media, and more by the surfeit of lies via advertisements.

Sri Lankan Buddhists are not being encouraged to follow the Buddha’s teachings to lead lives of Simplicity, the fundamental Ethics of the Pansil, Cleanliness and Non-Violence; with a rejection of overt Opulence and Wealth. Even the temples and the clergy who administer them seem to be caught up in the pursuit of a demand for and a display of acquired wealth.
One cannot blame the people for the changing global culture that grips them, as IMAGE & WEALTH are projected 24/7 as the most compelling ideals to be emulated and acquired. This trajectory if modulated into a recognition of Moderation and the Middle Path is no doubt the ideal for the human societies that govern the planet.

And who is to guide and provide the example, if not the Nation’s Leaders who steer the country’s destiny? With the breakdown of ethical leadership in the world, it will be a slow breakdown that will not be perceptible enough to generate the necessary consciousness for REAL CHANGE; not the fake promise of change as happened in Sri Lanka.

  11. sena Says:

The reason SrI lanka will never develop – In developed countries if a politico interfered in a criminal case, financial or criminal like murder or rape the politician would go home and probably charged. In sri lanka the honest law abiding official who resist such action will be sent home and physically harmed.

And the reason that eventually Sri lanka will lose all the gains obtained thank to the sacrifices of more than 25 thousand war heroes is all the Tamil politicians elected are of good stature and capabilities but same can be said of very few Sinhala politicians

  12. sena Says:

Let us light 85 thousands oil lamps to protect buddhism

  13. sena Says:

When Arabian traders and forces were coming to Buddhist North India history says the people had no inclination to protect the Buddhist monasteries as they were so aloof from the lives of the people. Exact same situation exit in SL today, where very hew Buddhist clergy is involved in social services and most are interested in power peddling, accumulating wealth and participating in rituals. The wealth in Temples ( as well as the good will the priests can easily generate from the public) can be used to help rural families (specially women and children) whose standard of living is falling every year and have to take desperate measures like going to ME as housemaids (on whose dollar income SL is desperately depend on)

  14. Fran Diaz Says:

Nilwala has given an accurate picture of what is going on.
    Thank you, Nilwala !

    ———-

May be Global Climate Change may change the ongoing trajectory ?
Will a global shift in the Consciousness happen in any other way ?

  15. Ananda-USA Says:

    Nilwala and Fran,

The TSUNAMI I speak of may not be violent, but may be peaceful political protests and demonstrations that would topple the government even without elections.

How many such Popular Revolts have you seen in the recent past in many countries across the globe? The storm is gathering strength in Sri Lanka too.

About our Theravada Buddhism losing its simplicity in Sri Lanka, to some extent that is inevitable as modern communications, technology and desire for an apparent higher standard of living invades our country.

Nevertheless, the strength of a culture and a religion can be measured by how they cope with these changes. The yearning for simplicity is rising across the globe even as the world seemingly becomes more complex and materialistic. Certain cultures, like Japan’s, have retained their simple ways in the face of this inexorable advance. Will we Sinhala Buddhists do as well or even better?

We, the Buddhist laymen aided by the Buddhist clergy a
MUST develop our awareness and concioisly develop ways of doing this because it offers many life enhancing benefitd. It also is ONE IMPORTANT WAY in which we Sinhala Buddhists are uniquely different from other cultures; it is something good that we have to offer the world at large as well. Perhaps it is because of this mindset that despite all the difficulties and setbacks we Sri Lankans have managed to carve out a largely equitable and egalitarian society in Sri Lanka compared to neighboring countries in South Asia.

I thank you for bringing up this very important issue.

  16. Fran Diaz Says:

    Ananda,

    Thank you for response.

I, for one will support any non-violent protest in spirit and the written word to STOP any division of the country and remove poverty through Development.

As for preservation of our culture, eradication of dire poverty is, first, a must. In my humble opinion, for such an ambitious venture to be successful, it would take the joint efforts of ALL leaders to work together and for no good leaders to back off with their booty, without fighting those who can get a job of work done. In my view, the MR govt did have a few odd fellows, but they have shown up as the ‘bol issas’ clearly and the country can do without them. A solid Middle Class is the backbone of the country and that is the way to go through a good job oriented education for the youth, good health care, and basic needs. The magnetic draw toward the Middle Class aspirations is a healthy one and not counter culture, as opposed to the ‘filthy rich’ aspirations.

All Leaders, Clergy, Parents & Teachers have to set the right ‘tone’ for Development, keeping to Buddhist Values as much as possible. As Gota said in his recent talk at the Sambodhi Centre, he has handed over much of the responsibility to the Buddhist Clergy.

Re one-ness in a country, Japan is fortunate in being monoculture and virtually monoethnic. Sri Lanka’s over diversity gets in the way of true unity. The Tamil Separatism issue is the most negative aspect. I sincerely think that removing the illegal 13-A is a must and activating the 6-A, another must.

All this Development work talk from us may be very sketchy, but not so for a seasoned politician like MR and quite few able others in other fields of activity. The vast majority of the people trust MR, and so do I, though the RW/CBK/India/foreign countries media machine may say otherwise.

I would like to add that some of the best of the best in our country form a group to lead the country forward. One person in the driving seat alone may be targetted too often by the negative factions in the country.

  17. Ananda-USA Says:

ONCE MORE, Chief Minister of the Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran COMMITS TREASON against his country by INVITING a FOREIGN POWER to INTERVENE in the Governance of Sri Lanka!

We DEMAND that the Government of Sri Lanka IMMEDIATELY DISMISS him from office, INDICT him for TREASON, PROSECUTE him, CONVICT hi, and PUNISH him for this TREASON by SENTENCING him to LIFE IMPRISONMENT,

He, as a former Chief Justice of Sri Lanka’s Supreme Court knows this is TREASON, and MUST pay the PRICE for TREASON!

Let us recall that King Charles I of England was tried, convicted, and executed for high treason by the Parliament led by Oliver Cromwell in January 1649 for the SAME ACT OF TREASON: Raising foreign forces to war against the English people in a war in which about 300,000 people, or 6% of the population, perished. The Chief Minister is attempting to raise support from foreign powers, in the present case the United Kingdom, against his motherland of SRi Lanka.

Charles was accused of treason (see Wikipedia.org) against England by using his power to pursue his personal interest rather than the good of the country. The charge stated that he, “for accomplishment of such his designs, and for the protecting of himself and his adherents in his and their wicked practices, to the same ends hath traitorously and maliciously levied war against the present Parliament, and the people therein represented”, and that the “wicked designs, wars, and evil practices of him, the said Charles Stuart, have been, and are carried on for the advancement and upholding of a personal interest of will, power, and pretended prerogative to himself and his family, against the public interest, common right, liberty, justice, and peace of the people of this nation.”

Chief Minister is GUILTY of TREASON; the GOSL should punish him for it, lest other SEPARATISTS are encouraged to follow his example. ACT FAST, ACT NOW, ACT DECISIVELY!

    ………………………….
Sri Lanka’s Northern Province Chief Minister asks British envoy to intervene to resolve Tamil issues
Sat, Jun 11, 2016, 12:11 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 11, Colombo: Chief Minister of Sri Lanka’s Northern Province C.V. Wigneswaran says that he is slowly losing confidence in the government as he is yet to receive a response from the government to the proposals he presented including a proposal to endorse a federal system for the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The Chief Minister has made these remarks during a meeting with the British High Commissioner in Colombo James Dauris, who was visiting Jaffna Friday (10).

The High Commissioner has also held discussions with the Government Agent of Jaffna and other local officials, BBC Sinhala Service reported.

The Chief Minister pointed out to the High Commissioner that he still has not received a response from the government on the issues of Tamil political prisoners as well as on the issue relating to the lands belonged to the Tamil People in the North.

Following the meeting with the High Commissioner, Mr. Wigneswaran told reporters that he requested the Mr Dauris to get his government to intervene and pressure the Sri Lankan government to resolve the problems. He said the High Commissioner agreed to discuss the issues with the government officials.

Meanwhile, making a statement in Vavuniya, the Chief Minister said considering the fire and explosions of the ammunition storage at the Kosgama Army Camp, the ammunition storage in the “Militti” army camp in Jaffna should be removed along with the entire camp.

He pointed out that maintaining weapons storages in populated areas endanger the lives of the people.

The Chief Minister noting that the war has been over for seven years and there is no need to maintain army camps in the North any longer, said more police officers can be deployed and strengthened the police to provide security to the people in the North.

  18. nilwala Says:

    Ananda, Fran, Friends:
Thank you for this discussion on the present state of Buddhism in Sri Lanka and the responsibilities of the Sinhala people to manage the changes. I agree that change being inevitable with the effort to better the living standards, the unfortunate consequences could be a sacrifice in the value system that accompanies it. I only hope that we do not let go of the Middle Path, which is of course something of a razor’s edge. Unleashing the craving will usually result in a peaking at which point of course as Fran has said, Nature intervenes through disasters….this is what we would hope to avoid! My concern is that when the people demonstrate in protest, those currently holding power will not hesitate to use all out force to contain it in whatever ways they can. They see the division of the Sinhala Buddhists as an integral element of that containment.
