In the wake of former President Chandrika Kumaratunga calling for a Federal and Quasi-Secular Constitution for Sri Lanka, the joint opposition (JO) said it was totally opposed to ‘Federalism’ as a means to resolving the national question.

JO parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardane said yesterday they met to discuss the issues concerning the country at large.

He said the JO had noted the statements made by Ms. Kumaratunga call for a Federal and Quasi-Secular Constitution for Sri Lanka.

Federalism will result in the disintegration and partition of the country,” the MP said and added that the JO stood for a unitary constitution.

Ms. Kumaratunga said at a recent function that Federalism as concept had been accepted in several countries and there was no need to be frightened about it.

  1. Dilrook Says:

If the JO is opposed to federalism, they must oppose 13A as well.

13A made Sri Lanka a federal country with just a namesake “unitary” clause in the Constitution. No unitary country has elected Chief Ministers, Constitutionally defined provincial lists and concurrent lists of powers and parliamentary inability to strike out provincial powers at will.

Before Ranil left for China, he secretly met Dinesh and Mahinda where the two JO leaders said they support the process of constitution making. Now he publicly claims otherwise.

People must rally around leaders not corrupted by parliamentary presence.

  2. S.Gonsal Says:

Dinesh was the first (in JO) to approve Indrajit Coomaraswamy who was helping a Tamil LTTE Godfather in the USA. JO had to shut up after that.

We need leaders who OPPOSE ANY FORM OF FURTHER DEVOLUTION.
    Is there ANY ?
