Police fear that the arrest of the Bodu Bala Sena leader Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera would lead to negative consequences and even a possible public uprising, a high ranking Police official said yesterday.

The official who did not wish to be named, for obvious reasons, told Ceylon Today that the Police are aware of the dormant possibility…… of a public uprising in the event of the thera’s arrest. The Court has already issued an arrest warrant on the thera who is facing charges that include hate speech and instigation of racial violence. Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesman DIG Priyantha Jayakody, said yesterday that a search for the thera is currently underway by separate Police investigation teams. He warned that harbouring a fugitive is unlawful and could lead to legal implications. DIG Jayakody also dismissed various comments made by various politicians on the whereabouts of the thera, adding that these statements were purely political and lacked substance.
