Doesn’t matter whether Glyphosate is a causal agent of the kidney disease (CKDU) in Sri Lanka or not, this is what the material safety data sheet of Glyphosate advises.

“Eco toxicity Version: 1 Avoid contaminating waterways. Page 4 of 6 Aquatic toxicity: Toxic to aquatic organisms. May cause long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life”

We should not forget, what happened to aquatic life in Sri Lanka, due to the introduction of pesticides. We were used to enjoy catching fish like, Ankutta and Magura during the floods, when we were young, some forty, fifty years ago. They were so abundant, even a school going kid could catch them in plenty in those good old days. What happened to those fish? The main culprit is pesticides, no question.

It is pathetic to see hectares and hectares of brown patches with no plant life due the use of Glyphosate (or similar total weed killers), when travel through the lush green landscape in New Zealand. May be, Glyphosate work for Kiwis in the short run. but who knows the side effects that can come after twenty thirty years. We believe the chemicals we are using today is safe, that is according to the information available at present. It was the same with DDT. During the second world war, some armies advised their soldiers to use DDT to control head lice, thinking it was a very safe chemical. Those advisers depended on the information available at that time. But the use of DDT was totally banned after few years.

So, if the Sri Lankans (or the government of Sri Lanka) is ready to do their farming without Glyphosate, let them do it. Farmers, even Tea planters survived for generations, before the Glyphosate was introduced.

  2. DrPadmaWijesekara Says:

    Lionel
I assume that you are living in New Zealand.
As probably you have noticed, every time when we get a medicine from a pharmacy in New Zealand or in Australia or in England they issue us with a technical details of the medicine listing out all possible side effects. The list of side effects will not deter you from taking the medicine.
Similarly every commercial chemical has it’s technical data sheets and they have to provide you with toxicity threshold levels for consumers information.

I know some people who freshly arrived from Sri Lanka even hesitate to take medicine after reading the list of possible side effects that they have never come across in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka,Most of the time they even not tell you the name of the medicine you receive.

It is merely a legal requirement here to worn the end users and also that prevents possible legal actions that may arise after use of these chemical and medicines.
RoundUP and Glyphosate are legal here in the Western world as in India and other Asian countries. In these countries those who want to use chemicals for their agriculture they are free to do so. But there is another option also available for them. Ie Bio products that are produced without using chemical but if you are willing to pay about 50% of extra price.

Therefore, it is highly inappropriate and illogical to force producers and consumers to go for Bio product only. This will ruin our agriculture and lose our competitiveness in the world market.

If you are unhappy about Herbicides, pesticides, Roundup or Glyphosate don’t use it, go for Bio products. But let others to have their freedom to access cheaper products.

Is glyphosate present in everyday foods?

Glyphosate is found in food infrequently. As part of the European Food Safety Authority’s 2012 report on Pesticide Residues in Food, 635 samples were tested. Of these, none exceeded the EU’s maximum residue level for glyphosate.
Although glyphosate residues are sometimes present in food, it has only been detected in very small proportions.* To put it in perspective, the rare findings of glyphosate residues food are in such small quantities they are roughly equivalent to a few drops of water in an Olympic-size pool.
Any real danger from a potentially toxic substance depends levels where it can actually be a problem. EU Member States have set this level for
glyphosate at 0.5 parts per million in humans**.
Based on the tiny amounts in which glyphosate residues are sometimes found in food, including wheat, a person would have to consume an incredible amount to get anywhere close to enough of it in their system to be potentially hazardous.
You could eat 450 boxes of cereal every 24 hours for the rest of your life and still be at a level of glyphosate exposure considered safe by the EFSA.
Trace amounts of glyphosate can also be found in products such as bread and beer, but a recent study by the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) showed that an adult would need to drink 1,000 litres of beer in a single day*** to be exposed to health risks from residues.
    Is glyphosate toxic to humans?
Glyphosate works on an enzyme path not found in humans or animals. It does not build up inside our systems and rapidly passes through the body****. It’s one reason why glyphosate residue has such a low level of toxicity for animals and humans. In fact, glyphosate is about half as toxic as table salt and more than 10 times less toxic than caffeine.
Based on one of the largest databases ever made on an agricultural product, the EU, the Joint WHO/FAO Meeting on Pesticide Residues and the US Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) have all concluded that glyphosate is not detrimental to the reproduction or development of animals or humans.

Thanks Lionel. Your comment is great.

Another issue is the way these Chemicals are used. We do not have any standards that prescribe the methods of using the chemicals. The people who apply these chemicals do not used proper wear or use proper equipment. They use it rain or in dry hot weather. Proper amounts are not used.

It may be ok in Canada or some other place.

By the way the stuff that is used here is not Roundup, it is a concoction of Chemicals brought from India and China. The buggers who started to bring in these cheap substandard stuff from India and China are multi billionaires in dollar terms.

If we are to use Phosphate based stuff let us use our own Phosphate.

There is a big difference of using a can of round up in your back yard in a house in the West and what is happening here.

When Glyphosate is used to kill weed, it dries them up as the final outcome. It does something to the water management mechanism of weeds. It does the same thing to humans’ and other living beings’ water management mechanism which is regulated by the kidneys. Glyphosate doesn’t discriminate between various living tissues.

  5. DrPadmaWijesekara Says:

Controversial weedkiller in Roundup ‘does not cause cancer’, says European expert committee (independent.co.uk)March 2017
‘The overwhelming weight of evidence shows that glyphosate poses no risk to human health when used correctly,’ says farmers’ leader.
The weedkiller glyphosate – the main ingredient of Roundup – does not cause cancer, a European Union expert committee has controversially concluded.

The European Chemicals Agency’s Committee for Risk Assessment said it had agreed to restrict warnings to the current advice that it can cause “serious eye damage” and is “toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects”.

The committee, known as the RAC, “concluded that the available scientific evidence did not meet the criteria to classify glyphosate as a carcinogen, as a mutagen or as toxic for reproduction”.
Its opinion will now be checked and then sent to the European Commission, which will make a final decision on whether to relicense glyphosate for use for a further 15 years.

“The adopted opinion … will be taken into account when the Commission and Member States consider whether to renew the approval to use glyphosate as an active substance in pesticides, later this year,” the ECHA said in a statement.

In 2015, the World Health Organisation’s cancer agency said that it believed glyphosate “probably” caused cancer in a decision that sent shockwaves through the farming and herbicide industries.
However, since then, a number of other expert bodies, including the US Environmental Protection Agency, announced they had concluded this was not the case.

Glyphosate has also been linked to harmful but sub-lethal effects on bees.

Guy Smith, the vice-president of the National Farmers Union, welcomed the ECHA’s decision.

  6. Lionel Says:

It is hard to understand why so many ex-scientists cry for the ban of Glyphosate. There are so many alternatives for weed killers. For instance, water is the best weed killer for rice farmers. In irrigated rice, farmers can use water to kill and supress any weed. Someone can argue it is a waste of resources, but it is better for the environment. In dry farming, farmers can use straw to supress the weeds. In subsidiary crops, manual weeding is the best practise for a country like Sri Lanka. I am not experienced enough to comment on plantation crops. But, I am sure three are alternatives.

Everyone knows there are hiccups in presidential task force, advocating “Wasa Wisa Nethi Ratak”. Their alternatives to chemical fertilizers are not practical. However, let them try the ban on Glyphosate. If the farmers can survive without Glyphosate, it is a win for Sri Lanka.

    Bodhi Says;

I have included some counter-comments here for discussion because, when you read the comments of people like Dilrook K, Lionel etc you see the extent of the impact of a lack of scientific education in a large segment of the public, and you see how many people are unable to understand the scientific method that the Buddha had stated some 20600 years ago in the Gnana Sutta. Dr. Padma Wijesekera had attempted to inject some quantitative thinking to a community that has little experience in that.

    Here are the comments:

[Ankuttas and Maguras DID NOT die of pesticides. Instead of the less than 4 million people we had in Sri lanka in 1900, now we have 22 million, all catching the Maguras, and filling nup the land and building houses and pouring concrete and kerosene and old batteries and household pain and engine oil into the ecosystem. They drive around in the country with
leaded petrol or in in smoke belching diesels and buses]

It is pathetic to see hectares and hectares of brown patches with no plant life due the use of Glyphosate (or similar total weed killers), when travel through the lush green landscape in New Zealand. [DDT is perfectly safe for use against mosquitoes. The WHO re-approved DDT in 2005 and annuled the ban on DDT that has resulted from the old hysteria against it. India, Russia, China NEVER banned it, and India even today uses DDT in its tea estates. DDT should be used INSIDE houses (not ourside) to control the Dengaue mosquitoes. THis was explained in a National Geopgraphic article and in an article by prof. Dharma-wardana]

So, if the Sri Lankans (or the government of Sri Lanka) is ready to do their farming without Glyphosate, let them do it. Farmers, even Tea planters survived for generations, before the Glyphosate was introduced.
Before glyphosate, tea estates used over one million MORE Indian Labourers than today. Do we want to get Indian manual labour again? Even that is not possible because unlike during British times, today they cannot be treated as “coolies or quasi-slaves: we need to pay them just wages. Also, use of manual labout is expensive by a factor of 10. Out Tea estates, rubber estates and vegetable gardens will go out of business as it costs too much. Aleady people are abandoning their small holdings and converting them to housing. One farmland is lost, it is lost for ever.
Also, weeding by turning the soil leads to extensive soil erosion and earth slips.

MY COMMENT: [Glyphosdate so so safe that you do NOT NEED to wear “proper equipment”. If the stuff is sued in excess, it should be found in the water, soil and environment. Repeated tests in Sri Lanka have shown nothing above 5 parts per billuion. That is like finding five TB patients in the whole of India (population 1 billion and saying, i.e., simply NOTHING.]
If glyphosate has been sued badly and if it is in the environment, all the algae in the water should be DEAD. But this is
NOT so in Sri Lanka where the water ways are clogged with weeds.]

[Roundup is being imported illegally from India for the balck market AFTER the ban. If you want quaklity control, you don’t ban it and send it underground]
If we are to use Phosphate based stuff let us use our own Phosphate.
[Phosphate is NOT a herbicide. This has nothing to do woth phospahte. Sri Lankan phosphate from Eppawala has a lot
of Arsenic. Just because some thing is from SL, it does not become any better. Just because somethign is ORGANIC, that too does not become better. Cow Dung has a the toxin known as Cadmium because grass and straw have cadmium.
Composte and manure containing cow dung should be analyzed to see if it is safe to use.

There is a big difference of using a can of round up in your back yard in a house in the West and what is happening here.

[Any one with a modicum of chemistry can test it to a great extent. Check its toxicity. The manufacturer knows what he released, but only the retailer knows what is being put out in his shop]
Quote – Doesn’t matter whether Glyphosate is a causal agent of the kidney disease (CKDU) in Sri Lanka or not, this is what the material safety data sheet of Glyphosate advises.

“Eco toxicity Version: 1 Avoid contaminating waterways. Page 4 of 6 Aquatic toxicity: Toxic to aquatic organisms. May cause long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life”.
Exactly. Its toxiciity is somewhat less than salt water. In regard to salt water also we can say, “Toxic to aquatic organisms. May cause long lasting harmful effects to aquatic life”
When Glyphosate is used to kill weed, it dries them up as the final outcome. It does something to the water management mechanism of weeds. It does the same thing to humans’ and other living beings’ water management mechanism which is regulated by the kidneys. Glyphosate doesn’t discriminate between various living tissues.

I have italicized the sheer nonsense written by Dilrook. Glyphosate acts on plants which have chlorophill and use sunlight by photosyntheis. Glyphosate does NOTHING to organisms DO NOT have chlorophyll ( the green stuff in plants). Dilrook can do a simple experiment, i.e, take four glasses. In (# one) put one cup of water, and 10 tad poles. In (# two) put one cup of water, one spoon of full strength glyphosate and 10 tad poles In (# three) put one cap of water, one spoon of salt, and 10 tad poles In (# four) put one cup of water, one spoon of full strength glyphosate, and some green algae. Leave the four glasses for six hours and come back and see the result. Dilrook will find that the tad poles in glass number #3) are pretty much dead, while NOTHING has happened to tad poles in glass#1 and #2. That is, glyphosate has NO effect on the tad poles, But in glass #4, the green algae would have begun to brown out.
Of course you don’t need to do such experiments. Glyphosate was discovered some 40 years ago, and thousands of very detailed experimentsahave been done over the last 40 years, at the level of biological, chemical, molecular and atomic investigations, and nothing what ever has been so stringently tested, especially because of the cry of frightened and mis-informed public. Glyphosate does NOTHING to the kidney. In any case, when glyphsate is applied in a farm WITHOUT gloves, the ingestion is only 3 micro grams /kg of body weight. As Dr. Padma Wijesekera had explained this is a mini-mini-mini-miniscule amount having no effect what so ever.

Glyphosate doesn’t discriminate between various living tissues.

    IT DOES DISCRIMINATE STRONGLY.
Glyphosate acts ONLY on the TISSUES CONTAINING CHLOROPHYLL (green matter found in plants).

One wonders from where Dilrook gets his “facts”. When it comes to political “facts” he makes them up or goes by what “seems likely”. That works sometimes because politics is just sets of opinions.
But when dealing with the physical world that does not work. That is why experiments are done to gather facts.
Opinions must fit in with the facts.

  8. Dilrook Says:

The Jury is still out on Glyphosate. There is no one scientific position on glyphosate the community can agree.

Only seeing pro-Glyphosate “scientific evidence” is not scientific at all.

  9. Lionel Says:

May be, we don’t have the scientific knowledge, Bodhi was talking about, to understand the safety of the pesticides. However, I have seen my own eyes, thousands of dead fish floating in waterways in Sri Lanka after spraying with a weedicide (Paraquat I believe) to control Salvenia. I have witnessed the disappearance of fish like Ankutta, Magura and Telia from my own village surrounding after the farmers started using pesticides. There should be some impact of the population growth and use of other chemicals for the disappearance of these fish species as pointed out by Bodhi, but the main culprit is the pesticides, no question.

As far as I know, one of the main reasons to ban the DDT was the finding of DDT in breast milk. We should thankful to Rachael Carson for her fabulous book “The Silent Spring” which was an eye opener to understand the bad side of the pesticides.

As claim by Bodhi, if countries like India and China still use DDT, we can imagine how those governments care about their own people. Sri Lankans are lucky, they didn’t have these so-called pesticide advocates as the presidential advisors so far, to re-introduce DDT.

As I mentioned before, doesn’t matter whether Glyphosate is the reason for CKDU or not, this total weed killer upset the balance of the nature. If it kills anything with chlorophyll (as claim by Bodhi), no one can say there is no impact to the environment. So, if Sri Lankans can do without Glyphosate, good on them! Why these couple of scientists cry for a product from a multi-national company?

  10. Fran Diaz Says:

Simplest way to explain why Glyphosate or even other poisonous material ought not to be used, if at all possible, in a country like Sri Lanka :
There was a deadly Separatist War on in Sri Lanka for nearly 30 yrs.
Chemicals can be used as a sort of ‘weapon’ isn’t it ? NCP is rife with CKD.

CKD became prominent during the 1990’s – just before the Cold War ended.

For such a long time Sri Lanka was called the “Granary of the East”. Now Lanka is buying rice from outside !

To the best of my knowledge, the simplest way to explain the action of Glyphosate is :

Glyphosate weed killer acts on the weed by using the “Shikimate Pathway” and kills it, dehydrating the plant.
Glyphosate is a potential killer of ALL plant life.
Glyphosate absorbed by cultivated plants such vegetables (not enough to kill them, but nevertheless absorbed), will be eaten by people. All People have gut flora essential for digestion. This gut flora too have the Shikimate Pathway. Gut flora gets killed by the Glyphosate eaten through food. Malabsorbtion of food causes various illnesses.

In Sri Lanka, it may be that the rice field areas with water gets the run offs from the hills where Glyphosate has been used. Paddy farmers walk barefoot in the waters of the rice fields and their skin absorbs the dissolved Glyphosate causing illnesses, predominently CKD, ultimately causing death. In Japan, rice farmers wear galoshes (high boots) and gloves, to prevent bare skin absorbing chemicals in water. Sri Lankans do NOT do this for protection.

In Sri Lanka, what does the Rice Research Institute, the Tea Research Inst and the Rubber Research Inst have to say about Glyphosate & other inimical chemicals plus the spate of CKDU ?

To reduce populations, it is far kinder to give FREE birth control material to all adults requesting such material, than to have wars, and poisoning through the food chain, etc.

  11. Fran Diaz Says:

I should say ” just after the Cold War officially ended in 1991″.

  12. Senerath Says:

Has any of these Glyposte supporters actually use it , handle it ? Do they wear gloves when handling ? If so , why ?

Can we have a Glyposite ( diluted to WHO approved amount) drinking session to prove please ?
None of these writers are ready to do this yet they write here in support. Why ?
    Check the money trail.

  14. Cerberus Says:

There are many who have written against Glyphosate including Timothy Vrain who was a former employee of Monsanto.
As far as I understand Glyphosate kills plants by preventing most plants from making certain proteins. Glyphosate stops a specific enzyme pathway (Shikimic acid pathway) which is necessary for plants and some microorganisms. Glyphosate should not be used till weeds have actually sprouted. It is, however, non-selective and will kill almost all species of plants both wanted (crops) and unwanted plants (weeds). This same Shikimata pathway exists in the gut flora of many mammals and humans and ingestion of Glyphosate will interfere with it and cause various diseases. Furthermore, many countries have banned it. Therefore as a small country, Sri Lankans need to be very careful. We started using Glyphosate in the 1990’s and already have many people with Kidney disease. This disease has emerged as a major problem a few year ago. There was large-scale use in Tea estates which then washes down into the lower levels where paddy farmers work. Various vendors in Sri Lanka had imported very large quantities and President Maithripala Sirisena banned it. I understand most of it has now gone into the black market.

Until the issues about Glyphosate are clear Sri Lanka should avoid the use of these toxic weed killers which only enrich the companies who produce it and their spokesmen. Therefore please be cautious in promoting this weedicide in our little country till we know more about it. The companies who manufacture this product are so enormously wealthy that they tend to suppress any information inimical to the spread of its use in Agriculture.

  15. Lionel Says:

These pesticide advocates should read the recent post by Waruna Chdrakeerthi in the Lanka Web.

  16. NeelaMahaYoda Says:

    Cerberus,

Only four countries have banned Glyphosate, i.e. Malta, Sri Lanka, Argentina and Netherland.

However, the Dutch parliament (Netherland) voted to ban the sale of glyphosate-based herbicides to private parties only. though the ban, under which agricultural use is excluded.Glyphosate is heavily used in all EEC countries.

I think people should understand that although you can have all these restrictions on use of insecticide and herbicide, the agricultural output of the country can be adversely effected by these decisions and very soon we may have to import very many agricultural products. A few years ago we were exporting rice and now the trend has reversed and we have to import rice again.

I am sure Most of these anti-glyphosate commentators had never stepped into a paddy field and work there. We use 90% manual labour in agriculture and mechanisation is at it’s lowest level. Without chemicals the agriculture in Sri Lanka will face a slow and painful death instigated by population explosion. Recently I visited the rural area where I spent my childhood 60 years ago.

It was a village in Warakapola area . The village was located in a valley surrounded by hills with virgin thick forest all four sides. It was so thick that we called these forests Kalu Kelaya (කලු කැලය). There were many streams of water (දොල පාරවල්) running through the face of the hills even during thickest of the drought season.

After 60 years when I went there, I was really sad to see the thick forest has gone completely, there are no signs of water streams (දොල පාරවල්). Even the small river (ඔය) we used to go and swim occasionally has transformed into a culvert. This is the bitter results of the population explosion and forest clearance for agriculture.

What we need is not an outright ban, but some institutionalised regulations to monitor and control the use of these chemicals just like in other developed countries (Australia, New Zealand, EEC)
