Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith yesterday said that people who had been shaped by Buddhist civilization do not violate human rights and added a society which attempts to make human rights a religion, could safeguard human rights effectively through Buddhist teaching.

Cardinal Ranjith expressed these views at the prize giving of Kanduboda Shri Saranankara Daham Pasala in Delgoda organized by the Ven. Parakaduwe Sri Saranankara Thera recently. Chancellor of the Kelaniya University Ven. Dr. Walamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Thera presided over the event.

He said there were threats posed on religions at present and added that Buddhism was the backbone of this country and it was a religion which had been followed by the people in this land for a long time.

Rights of all people in this country are safeguarded when Buddhist culture is safeguarded. Anti religious ideologies are being filtered into the society today. We have to put them aside and safeguard religions,” he said.

Since we have inherited a great culture over the years, there is no need to think about human rights in a special way. Religions are not followed in some countries. Human rights are safeguard in our country much more than what is prescribed by the UN in Sri Lanka because of the Buddhist environment,” he added.

He also said the efforts made by the Buddhist clergy to bring up children according to Buddhist principals were commendable. (Sudath Pubudu Keerthi)

We applaud Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s uprightness and bravery to point out the cardinal truth about the bogus human rights affliction that is affecting the uninformed in the world today. Human Rights, Democracy and R2P are just a clever means of diverting attention from the very human rights violations the Western Christian Countries are indulging in at present.

Just imagine a gross human rights violator such as Saudi Arabia sitting on the UN Body on Human Rights. Can there be any worse hypocrisy than this?

How Sri Lankan war heroes ended the Terrorist War at Nandi Kadal should be an example to all of these Human Rights angels. Our war heroes saved over 300,000 hostages from the clutches of the LTTE terrorists with love and compassion. All this is on record.

“Rights of all people in this country are safeguarded when Buddhist culture is safeguarded” said Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith!

Bravo, HE COULD NOT HAVE UTTERED ANYTHING MORE TRUE THAN THAT!

While APPLAUDING HIM for this LATE but WELCOME REALIZATION, I wish he had been as FORTHRIGHT when Catholic Priests in his FLOCK were AIDING & ABETTING the LTTE MURDERS & SEPARATISTS during the EELAM WAR YEARS!

We PATRIOTIC Buddhists SHOULD FORGIVE, but we SHOULD NEVER FORGET, for those who FORGET & DISARM THEMSELVES place their Motherland and their People in GREAT PERIL!

We have a RESPONSIBILITY and a DUTY to PROTECT & PRESERVE our HALLOWED Buddhist Culture, consecrated by the blood of our millions of dead ancestors who fought and died to preserve our inheritance from our enemies.

    Let us not FAIL them!

    Apita epa eka angalakwath,

    Annugey deshaka mey Maha Polowey!

    Malath nodemu eka angalakwath,

    Api ipadunu mey Mau Polowey!

    Very true.

This is why I commented in an article by Shenali last week not to demand answers from the Cardinal over Tamil Catholic priests respecting LTTE terrorism. The Sri Lankan Church is essentially divided just like the country. NPC exercises provincial powers vested in it (and more) disregarding national policy. A clear sign of a divided country.

We must respect the Cardinal. Given that most of the powerful nations are Christian (declared or not), his statements carry weight. We burn this bridge too and we will be digging our own grave even faster.

  4. Randeniyage Says:

This is a huge statement by the rev. cardinal. None of our Buddhist leaders said so in public.

“Since we have inherited a great culture over the years, there is no need to think about human rights in a special way. Religions are not followed in some countries. Human rights are safeguard in our country much more than what is prescribed by the UN in Sri Lanka because of the Buddhist environment,”

What we have to protect is “Buddhist Environment” which is being destroyed by present and all past governments.

    1. What kind of Buddhist environment we culture by allowing Black Gonibilla Dress to darken our shining culture when even the biggest Muslim country Indonesia does not allow it to spread uncontrollably like in Sri Lanka.

    2. What king of Buddhist Environment we create by allowing Jihadist aid to created Jassim Cities by getting rid of our pristine virgin forest ?
