Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday that they would not allow anyone to divide the country, which was rescued from the LTTE, through a Constitution.

Addressing an event held in Ampara, he said plans were afoot to bring in a new Constitution, which would pave the way to divide the country and added that it was not possible to bring in a Constitution forcibly.

He said the national question could not be resolved through a Constitution, which would incite hatred among the communities but it should be a Constitution agreeable to all communities of Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil.

We managed to rescue the country, when the LTTE was trying to divide it. It will be silly to think that we will allow the country to be divided through a Constitution,” he said.

He said it was questionable whether the government ensured the due place and respect to Buddhism, whereas it claimed that due place and respect were given to Buddhism in the Constitution.

  1. DR M D P DISSANAYAKE Says:

Prez MR will fight with all forces ( including Army, Navy and Police) with massive public push, if Sumanthiran/Ranil government attempt to play into the hands of Tamils.

The tide will turn when time is right, the dreams of divisive politicians will come to and end.

  2. Nihal Perera Says:

They ONLY patriotic leader who truly cares about the country.

The rest are: Ranil/Anura Kumara/Sumanthiran/ Karu (speaker), etc, are parasites who only care of themselves.

  3. Hiranthe Says:

That is what Mother Lanka expects all her true sons and daughters to do to protect her. The JO should keep their eyes open unlike during the time of 19A, during which only Mr. Sarath Weerasekera was awake and opposed to 19A.

Thereafter blaming Run-nil, Anura K and others will not help once the country is divided.

Be vigilant and be mindful patriots!! I read that 20 SLFP MPs have received Rs 400m each for supporting UNP’s budget. LieTTE is funding this.

Then imagine the price tag for supporting the Ealam constitution!!!

  4. Ratanapala Says:

Just empty words and bravado is not sufficient. There must be a program to stop this dastardly deed from being put into action. Mahinda R should gather all forces necessary internally as well as and most importantly internationally from friendly countries for this effort. The Tamil Economic Migrants also called the Diaspora are effectively harnessing power from their friendly countries. This makes our efforts almost like pissing in the wind!
