UNP to nominate Sajith as candidate on conditions

There was general agreement among the seniors of the United National Party (UNP) to nominate Minister Sajith Premadasa as the presidential candidate but on certain conditions to be stipulated in writing, Daily Mirror learns. The UNP seniors backing both Party Leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Mr.Premadasa met on Tuesday (24) to work out some arrangement to agree on candidacy.
The Prime Minister is reportedly in agreement that candidacy could be offered to Mr.Premadasa but on condition that he (Mr.Wickremesinghe) should remain the UNP Leader and the Prime Minister. Also there has to be commitment from Mr.Premadasa to abolish executive presidency .
Mr.Wickremesinghe’s position is that a power devolution package based on consensus reached at the parliamentary steering committee should be worked out to resolve the Tamil national question. ()

The best decision for the UNP. Sajith is far more useful for the nation than Karu or Ranil.
The first condition is absurd and shows Ranil’s desire to keep the party under him.
The next two conditions were also in Mahinda’s 2005, 2010 and 2015 manifestos (abolition of EP and maximum devolution).

It is a Hobson’s choice for Sajith, “Take it or leave it”. So, he is likely to accept it, but he will never be able to fulfill those conditions set by Ranil, even if gets elected as president, which is extremely doubtful. The imposition of conditions reveals the truth that there is no intra-party democracy in Ranil’s UNP; outside of the party Ranil will not venture beyond playing a de-mock-rat. We have to invent a new term to describe him (not that I have thought of one): a power-hungry psychopathically frustrated tin-pot dictator of cowardly nature and low values who dreams of ruling over a highly cultured people well schooled in democracy, though still vulnerable to misdirection by shameless crooks like him, who have repeatedly refused him that honour at elections. The Mahinda Gota duo (or whoever takes their place in the SLPP in the event of 2015 America sponsored conspirators taking them off the scene) will never agree to abolish the executive presidency unconditionally without first eliminating the threat of separation/or its federal equivalent; neither will they agree to work out a power devolution package based on a so-called consensus reached at “the parliamentary steering committee”, which was a product of undemocratic Ranil’s political sleight of hand.
