  1. Vaisrawana Says:

(A friendly suggestion and a personal opinion for what it is worth. It is a subjective view. Not to be accepted without thinking):

It would be equally or even more informative than this to watch one or both of the Hiru TV 6:55 and 9:55 pm (SL time) newscasts the same night (i.e., November 13) for a clear headed visual and audio summary of the final propaganda platforms of the three main candidates.

Making his final campaign speech before a sea of eager faces, front-runner Gota takes a brief non-spiteful look at the harassment he has been subjected to at every turn over the past five years by his opponents trying to implicate him in crimes he didn’t commit and to have him jailed; this harassment, he says, hasn’t yet stopped; then he very intelligently clinches his arguments in support of his candidature; he also looks forward to co-opting the youth of the country for a major developmental role, but stresses the importance of them acting responsibly. Gota has already impressed the electorate as the only intellectual as well as the only man of action among the three principal candidates.

At the UNP’s poorly attended final rally, Ranil W’s nonchalant haphazard comments are in keeping with the deliberate lackadaisical stance he has adopted throughout this 35 day campaign, and his hardly concealed wish for the defeat of Sajith (which will ensure that Ranil’s position in the party will remain intact, and that Sajith’s will be correspondingly downgraded and diminished). It is pathetic to see that Sajith’s mother is made to appear at this final rally, probably to excite some sympathy for her party-abandoned son. It shows the helplessness of his situation. Her presence will earn some teary votes for her son, though it will not be enough for him to win. A respectable Muslim minister in a former UNP cabinet (I can’t recall his name at this moment, but I believe he is an honourable politician – oh yes I now remember his name – Imthiaz Bakeer Maakar) who also speaks before Sajith makes his late night appearance on the stage with his accustomed meaningless bluster, makes the most forthright remarks about his party’s recent performance and its prospects of winning the presidency: he almost explicitly attributes the UNP’s current hopelessness to its own dismal doings during Yahapalanaya; it is as if he is tacitly saying he won’t mind if potential UNP voters went pro-Gota!

Anura Kumara Disanayake of the JVP faces an even more depleted last campaign gathering. He seems to have given up all pretensions of presidential hopes. He’s definitely resigned to his party’s original, but ever receding, target of emerging as a credible altenrative to both the main camps. It was actually claimed or just rumoured that JVP campaigners asked its voters to vote for AKD and mark their second preference for the UNP’s Sajith. But in his final campaign address, he makes it a point to categorically refute this. Both he and his Comrade Tilvin Silva condemn the UNP for its failures, but avoid making any references, derogatory or otherwise, to the SLPP. It looks as if they wish the polls went to Gota’s advantage.

These are only my personal impressions.
