  1. Vaisrawana Says:

There are no ‘blasphemy’ laws in the Buddhist teachings, canonical writings or in our existing constitution to punish people for insulting the Triple Gem or Buddhism in general. Taking Mangala Samaraweera to court will serve no purpose, but instead will encourage a possible trend towards demanding by religious extremists the application of actual blasphemy laws specific to other religions even in situations where non-believers of those religions are compelled to point out things that would restrict Buddhists’ or others’ freedom of speech if blasphemy laws (as those in Islamic Sharia) are applied to them. Sri Lankan voters who rightly disapprove of the deeply discredited politician Mangala Samaraweera’s anti-Buddhist comments will deal with him appropriately, when the time comes. It is hardly possible that he is going to derive any benefit from making such comments. That will be punishment enough for him. Thus Mangala is not likely to be much of a challenge to ordinary Sri Lankans or the new president elect.

But certainly, these well meaning but stupid monks will be a problem for Gota unless, unlike Mahinda, he is able to reassure them and calm them down quickly before any actual harm is done to the urgent cause of national regeneration that he has been elected to address by nearly seven million voters, while attending to the genuine issues they have been raising for years now.

    Just a thought.
