UNP Leader and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed hopes that today’s general elections would be the last held under the Proportional Representation (PR) system in Sri Lanka.

Hopefully this would be the last general elections held in this country under the PR system. We proposed a mixed system without preferential votes when we were in the government. I hope we could work out an agreement and bring about a change in the electoral system,” Mr. Wickremesinghe told journalists after casting his vote at College House polling station today.

Also he said the Commission of Elections had done a good job ensuring that the election is conducted under strict health guidelines. I would like to thank the Commission of Elections for ensuring that health guidelines are followed when conducting the poll,” he added.

The online campaigns which were vastly visible in this election is likely to continue,” he said.
