So far Sri Lanka’s success is in her ability to chase, apprehend and isolate infected and / or  suspected Covid-19 individuals and their subsequent cure and rehabilitation. However, if the infection breaks out in the community which is now more mobile than they have been a few months  ago, it will be beyond Sri Lanka’s means to control it.

The good thing about the Covid-19 virus is that it can easily be contained if the population follow the simple guide lines of a) keeping the distance b) washing hands and c) wearing masks when out in public spaces and d) other healthy practices. We have to inculcate these practices into the public behavior.

We see the success of health services personnel and other services personnel in staying healthy by following these and other necessary guidelines.

At the moment greatest danger to Sri Lanka Covid-19 situation lies in the people dropping their guard and getting complacent. I can imagine the bewilderment of the already almost exhausted health services and security services personnel if a second wave strikes Sri Lanka. It has happened in New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and many other.

What needs to be done is to encourage people and exhort them on the successes so far achieved and also educate them on the downside – by showing what those infected with the disease has to go through physically and emotionally – through videos and other similar.

The whole of Sri Lanka’s sea board is porous and penetrable to either malicious or just simple illegal immigrants trying to enter Sri Lanka and the resulting danger of Covid-19 virus resurgence and a dangerous second wave.

Unless people understand the gravity of the pandemic they can easily get complacent and throw the whole country back into the abyss of Covid-19 all over again. All the money and the effort so far put by the team led by President Gotabhaya will be in vain!

The graphs show  CORVID-19 resurgence in a few countries whose initial success did not spare them from the second wave
