THE SUPERMARKET TERRORIST
* Aathil Samsudeen came to NZ in 2011, escaping a tortuous regime in Sri Lanka
* He was granted refugee status in 2013 but within five years had become angry and isolated
* He was the perfect candidate to be radicalised in his own living room, through Isis-inspired social media influences
* He was caught trying to travel to Syria in 2017 and a raid on his Queen St apartment uncovered a large hunting knife and disturbing, extremist images, videos and songs
The Herald has previously reported police tried to charge Samsudeen for allegedly plotting a “lone wolf” style knife attack, but could not because of a longstanding gap in NZ’s counter-terrorism law
* Authorities have been trying to have his refugee status revoked and for him to be deported since 2018
* Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern last night expressed her frustration and disappointment over the process
Samsudeen’s family in Sri Lanka have issued a lengthy statement, saying they are heartbroken and want to stand with NZ

The Islamic State supporter who stabbed at least five shoppers in an Auckland supermarket before being shot dead can now be identified – and along with it the full story of how a young man who turned to New Zealand for help as a refugee became radicalised in his own living room.

He was Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen, a 32-year-old born in Sri Lanka who came to New Zealand in October 2011 and was granted refugee status two years later.

The Herald can reveal immigration officials had sought to revoke his refugee status in 2018, but he appealed and a final decision had yet to be made on whether he could be deported.

His uncertain immigration status was also the reason why the terrorist could not be identified until 11pm Saturday night, when it was lifted by a High Court judge, as anyone claiming refugee status cannot be identified by law.

Samsudeen was Tamil – a minority ethnic group persecuted by Sri Lankan authorities during a decades-long conflict – and claimed he and his father were attacked, kidnapped and tortured because of their political background.

His claim to asylum was supported by scars on his body, as well as a psychologist’s report which said Samsudeen presented as a “highly distressed and damaged young man” suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

In granting refugee status to Samsudeen, the Immigration Protection Tribunal ruling, obtained by the Herald on Sunday, said the appellant was “persistently re-experiencing traumatic events”.

“[The psychiatrist] believes it can only be explained in terms of traumatic experience, and she states that, in her opinion, it would be very difficult for him to have fabricated the degree of disturbance displayed during the interviews she conducted.”

He was angry and worried about the safety of his parents, with his anxiety heightened by living so far away in a strange country, without the support of friends and family, and lacking confidence and maturity.

24/7 Surveillance, but Sixty Seconds is a lifetime to the victims!

It would have been best if the New Zealand government was able to explain to some of their citizens who are still in the dark as to the nature of ISIS /ISIL ideology and what motivates them to follow its dictates – the killing of Infidels – the non-believers! Establishment of the Caliphate is their goal! The precursor of the Caliphate are the little islands of Sharia Fiefdoms that are springing up all over the world in cities and towns. The seeds of terrorism begins in little known obscure schools called – Madrasaas. Parents willingly send their children to these schools little knowing that in addition to studies of the Koran, the seeds of intolerance and terrorism too are imbued into the young and impressionable minds, only to be activated at a later date when called upon as a mindless robot-warriors to serve the Caliphate.

Many countries, mostly in Europe are slowly realizing the extent to which this ideology has already hurt their countries, cultures as well as innocent people. Among those who have suffered and now trying to come to terms painfully are Denmark, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway and to some extent Germany, Hungary and many others including India and Sri Lanka.

The Soft Bigotry of Low Expectations! This is what an enlightened Muslim living in Sweden says of the Swedes. In the following U-Tube clips one just have to ‘read’ New Zealand for Sweden, then the story will make sense as to the official attitude and behaviour towards migrants!

Just like the UK, Australia and France, now New Zealand is silently suffering this menace. It is alright not to mention Islamic Terrorism to be politically right but what was the compulsion to mention Sri Lanka – shall we say a red herring to mislead for a terrorist could have come from anywhere. Does it make any difference if the terrorist came from Sri Lanka, the Middle East, the UK, the USA or anywhere for that matter? – the important underlying denominator being Islamic Terrorism!

Just now all Sri Lankans in New Zealand are being sent these Helplines in case they need counselling! Is there any need for a self respecting Sri L ankan to feel guilty and to be in need of counselling about this crime committed by an Islamic Terrorist from Kattankudy a known Islamic Terrorist Hotbed in Sri Lanka, a locality connected to the Easter Sunday Bombings in April 2019?

The Geneva narrative – Demonize Sri Lanka!

Sri Lanka is easily taken as the fall guy for many ills and is now painted in the same colour with ISIS / ISIL ideology. Sri Lanka became the victim of the Easter Sunday Attacks in Sri Lanka following the Mosque attack in Christchurch and now in Auckland, New Zealand Sept 2021, both carried out by Islamic Terrorists! Is it right to conveniently forget or ‘innocently’ feign ignorance that the massacre that took the lives of over 250 innocents in Sri Lanka in April 2019 pursuant to the Mosque massacre in March 2019, just one month prior are not entirely separate incidents and unconnected?

The terrorist Samsudeen’s mother accused his neighbours in New Zealand from Syria and Iraq of radicalising her son in an interview with her at her home in Kattankudy, 330km east of Colombo. She said Samsudeen was injured in a fall in 2016 and that the neighbours, whom she did not name, seized the opportunity to influence him, adding they “were the only people who helped him as he recovered”. “Those neighbours from Syria and Iraq are the ones who brainwashed him,” she said, adding her son had started posting radical views on social media after meeting the neighbours. Fact of the matter is that the terrorist lived almost a third of his life getting radicalized locally in New Zealand – a country famed to be ‘soft’ on terrorism! We hope that the New Zealand authorities are pursuing these leads earnestly.

What is sad is how 7 innocents had to bear the brunt of this ideology and now suffering the aftermath in hospital, all because of the lack of adequate legislation to contain the Islamic terrorist menace. New Zealand taxpayer is paying an enormous price to be politically correct – this time in blood!

Good Muslims must be helped to get out of the extremist mindset that is taught in their religious schools – the madrasaas!
