The Amnesty report - The critics must come with clean hands

Truth is the first casualty of a war. Sri Lanka's civil war waged by the Tiger separatists has been anointed with very many, noble, high sounding names, such as war of liberation, oppression of the minorities, genocide of Tamils and prisoners of conscience etc.

Recently, another Amnesty International report brought about a new publicity stunt to the ailing terrorist organization, after U.S. State Department's listing of the group as a terrorist organization. Perhaps, this report must have been hurriedly published with the help of a generous donation urgently required by the organization for its own survival.

Meanwhile the world's most ferocious band of killers are battering on the unsuspecting world, leaving a trail of death, mayhem and disaster. The world's biggest democracy was not spared, it in shambles, now looking for a long trail of political uncertainty. The many-headed monster it created not only destroyed its creator but also the entire democratic fabric of Indian society.

The forgotten victims of this war are the innocent Sinhala and Muslim civilians who are killed and injured by constant attacks on civilian villages by the LTTE to drive them out of Northern and Eastern areas of the country to justify their claim of a 'Purist Home Land for Tamils'. Unlike the Tamils, who have a well organized propaganda network to show to the world the "plight of the Tamils", these innocents they massacre, have no such sophisticated propaganda machinery to bring their butchery to the attention of the World. At a conference held at the Ministry of Defense to discuss matters raised by the Amnesty International, the Police authorities accused LTTE rebels of slaughtering infants and children as young as 18 months old in reprisal attacks on Sinhalese villages. The police said "The youngest child killed by the LTTE during attacks on villages in Mahakalugollawa, Kegalu-Oya and Siyambalanduwa, on November 2, 1995 was a boy of 18 months".Even though such reports have been published in the international press, the Amnesty international has deliberately ignored them in their report.

This will bring the question of credibility of Amnesty's investigations. As Mr Wijedoru (Hongkong)correctly pointed out in his articles, when the western world tries to preach to Asians countries about their so-called human rights records, knowledgeable Asians are amused to say the least. They quite rightly ask what the human right records have been of the numerous dictators in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa Asia, Middle Eastern Countries who have been the accomplices in the robbing and plundering of their respective countries under the protection of the western military umbrella? If organizations like Amnesty International and Asia Watch are in fact interested in human rights worldwide they ought surely by now to have published the results of any studies they carried out on the human rights situation in the United States, particularly in the light of recent events in Los Angeles which is but the tip of an iceberg. In this connection it is also very puzzling for Asians, just as much as to the rest of the world, to what the differences are between the human rights of Haitians setting out to sea seek asylum elsewhere and those from Vietnam doing virtually the same in this part of the world. Stop Preaching to Asians(Wijedoru)

Western countries and their local appendages like Mrs. Aris and Mr. Lee must realize that Asia can very well do without polluting ourselves any more with the political concepts which provided umbrellas to the regimes of numerous inhuman puppet dictators worldwide and with the alleged culture and civilization which generated, perpetuated and cheered the Inquisition, Holocaust, Colour Bar and Apartheid.Human rights in Asia: critics must come with clean hands(Wijedoru)

Thanks to Amnesty international, Some Convicted Egyptian 'terrorists' are living on benefits in Britain. Three men sentenced to death for terrorist offenses in Egypt have been allowed to live in Britain, where at least one of them has claimed thousands of pounds in social security benefits.Convicted Egyptian 'terrorists' living on benefits in Britain (The Sunday Times-UK)

The same group was allegedly responsible for the recent massacre at Luxor in Egypt. "Some of the worst savagery took place at the sanctuary of Anubis, the ancient god of embalming and the dead who is represented by the head of a jackal. Blood and pieces of human flesh stuck to the walls and high ceiling as the terrorists shot and slashed at their victims with knives, making the chamber with its beautiful bas-reliefs look like a primitive slaughterhouse." Terror at the temple(The Sunday Times)

"They didn't just kill, they took pride in their work, celebrating in the sunshine as they dispatched their victims. Last week's slaughter of 58 foreign tourists, including six Britons, by Muslim fundamentalists in the Egyptian city of Luxor has forced the world once again to confront the phenomenon of a resurgent Islam." In the name of Allah(The Sunday Times-UK)

Amnesty has listed these groups as prisoners of conscience "Thousands of suspected members or sympathizers of banned Islamist groups, including possible prisoners of conscience were held without charge or trial..".(Amnesty International Report) Amnesty has also blamed the Egyptian government for rounding up of these terrorists. In the name of " Fighting Terrorism", indefinite detention and torture become systematic human rights violations in Egypt (Amnesty International Report)

Unfortunately, with their own lives 58 Europian tourists had to pay for the mistakes their own human rights groups are making . If we are to survive well into the next millennium, all Asian should draw a policy line now. We should not let Add-hoc Human rights groups that are indirectly linked to their Western masters dictate terms for our own affairs, our own security. Our survival depend upon the action we take now as a community to upheld the law and order. In case of Sri Lanka, we have no other obligations to the West, since we have to import our military hardware from China and Russia.
