I wish to quote below from COMMENTARY No. 77 a CANADIAN SECURITY INTELLIGENCE SERVICE publication on LIBERATION TIGERS OF TAMIL EELAM’S (LTTE) INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION AND OPERATIONS - A PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS by Peter Chalk

To all those who are voicing about a ceasefire and eventual peace with LTTE. “Peace” is a banner under which the LTTE continuously campaigns internationally.

The slogan has been used effectively to attract several non-governmental organizations to side with the LTTE struggle in Sri Lanka. Prominent examples include the Canadian Relief Organization for Peace in Sri Lanka;(14) the International Educational Development Inc. (IED);(15) the World Council of Churches; the Australian Human Rights Foundation; the International Human Rights Group; the International Federation of Journalists; Pax Romana; the International Peace Bureau; the International Human Rights Law Group; and the Robert F Kennedy Memorial Center for Human Rights.(16) Gaining the support of such groups by playing the “peace card” has been extremely beneficial to the LTTE.

By publicly demonstrating the support the group has received from prominent NGOs around the world, the LTTE believes it has succeeded in internationalizing their cause and legitimizing the claim for an independent state of Tamil Eelam. Hence all prudent readers of Lanka Web should realise the fact that when LTTE is capable of using large organisations for their benefit, it is so simple for them to mobilise individuals to achieve their goal of an ethnically pure state - Tamil eelam.

UPUL, You are a Gem

I wish there are a few more like you amongst the Sinhalese. Your idea is really great. Perhaps it could be fine-tuned further so as to make your idea work in a practical manner and continue to gather momentum to achieve its objectives.

I think you have outlined the real problems in Sri Lanka in a few sentences. There is no point writing pages and pages. I like to reinforce these in my own words. Every right thinking Sinhalese should sit back and think independently.

1 During the last fifty years the quality of life in Sri Lanka has declined while other countries in south and south-east Asia have leapt forward, though there are more than one ethnic/language group live in each of these countries.

2 Politicians have always been too clever for the electorate. They will always come out with some new cheating method and are prepared even to kill, so as to win. Because it is worth it, you see! While in power they will make their millions. The country gets poorer. The foreign development loans (loans have to be repaid, remember!) swindled by the politicians and their friends will have to repaid in the future. Pensions offered to the families of the poor Sinhalese soldiers who get killed in action will also have to be paid in the future. The list goes on. All this means that we, the taxpayers, and our future generations will continue to pay for all the follies of these politicians in power. Please get this clear. They have a good time now and we have to continue to pay all our lives for their enjoyments!

3 During election campaigns politicians have been successful in making the voter believe the 'issue' that they put forward is very important. They make you believe that and use it to win the election.

Three examples:

1.'Sinhala Only in 24 hours' in 1956;

2. 'We want peace', in 1994;

3. 'We must eliminate Terrorism', in 2000.

The first never gave the promised good life to the Sinhalese. The second never materialised. The third, perhaps will take them through the next six years. What will they come up with next?

4 In any other country, the military would have taken over the country by now. But our politicians are very clever here too! By switching the military leadership like in musical chairs and keeping their relatives/henchmen in key positions they have seen to that too!

5 We claim to have a highly literate population. I doubt it. Then how come that we are being constantly hoodwinked by these politicians?

6 It is time to rise.

Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim has arrived in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, to try to broker peace talks between the government and Tamil Tiger rebels fighting for a separate homeland. Next he will try to broker peace talks between the US & The Saudi dissident Osama bin Laden and The United Nations.

Enough is Enough. Fifty years of Tamil perscution. Twenty years of Bloodshed. Over a 100,000 lives lost or destroyed. Brothers killed. Women made widows.

Not rupees. US Dollars my friends. Let us get together and use the power of the ordinary people.

Democratic Power. Non-violent Power. By sitting and watching, and doing nothing about the murder, bloodshed and anahilation, YOU become a defacto associate with the criminals.

Whether you are simply following the CNN MB or participating as a contributor, may I humbly request you to act on the following-; Please start a chain (email) letter NOW to minimum 10 persons either in SLG, media, politicians, friends and if you are domiciled in a foreign country, to your MP or Congress and request them to-;

Terrorists or Terrorised

Almost all Lankaweb contributors and most of the articles you give prominence to, appear always to have a bash at the LTTE. It must be a big bore to the intelligent and broadminded visitors to your website.

Having browsed through your site I am now convinced why these contributors are always intent on this rhetoric and use the word 'Terrorists' all too often when describing LTTE. It is because they are 'Terrorised' by the thought that LTTE will not stop at carving out a separate state for the Tamils in the Northeast but will go on to drive the people of the South (Sinhalese) in to the sea.

The contribution by Don B Algama has been very convincing on this matter.

He wants Norway to take 15 million of them. That won't be a problem, but it may be a 'little bit' cold up there. This 15 million, as a minority ethnic group in Norway will be treated in the same way successive 'democratic' governments (sic) in Sri Lanka treated the Tamil minority. I hope Don Algama is happy with that.

Don Algama is also trying to urge India to penalise Norway for Mr Solheim shaking the hands of the LTTE leader. He, perhaps, does not remember PLO, described by nations friendly to Israel as a 'Terrorist' organisation, for several years in the seventies and eighties. Now American President Clinton, as well as the leaders of all the western democratic countries, not only shake the hands of Arafat, the long time leader of PLO, but also hug him!

Try to legalise the Murder of Indian Prime Minister Rajive Gandhi

By the very act of shaking hands with Prabakran, the leader of LTTE, an outlawed terrorist group by many leading democratic nations of the world and wanted by Interpoal, the official representative of the NORWAIGIAN GOVERNMENT has effectively legalized the murder of esteemed Indian Prime Minister Rajive Gandhi who they planned and willfully murdered in cold blood. Not least to state the willful murder of MONKS, INFANTS, CHILDREN who were never part of the conflict. And of course Government Ministers, Prime Ministers, Presidents the lot. Further to its effect on Srilanka, this action is a, slap in the face to India, and specially on the Indian Congress Party Leader Mrs Sonia Gandhi, the widow of Rajive Gandhi.

I think, the people in INDIA should ask the Norwegian government for an explanation as to this conduct of their representative. AND REQUEST A PUBLIC APPLOGY FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF NORWAY. It is my opinion that Mr Solheim should be sent to all the prisons where political murders are kept to represent them to justify their actions as he seems well capable of doing, starting of course from Norway for any past, current or future murders of their political leadership.

If Norway is really interested in Srilanka, their sincere effort should be focused to correct any legitimate grievance of tamil people and not be the representative of a Terrorist Group. And this being not the case, one tends to think what drives Mr Solheim to this effect. And had this been a sincere effort of compassion for humanity, then one wonders where he has been in relation to other major conflicts of the world like Rwanda etc.

This being not the case of course what incentive Political or Personal, really drives him to this end. However the bottom line of his actions would be definitive.

AS LTTE IS NEVER GOING TO GIVE UP THE IDEA, OF NOT ONLY CURVING OUT A SEPERATE STATE, BUT EVENTUALLY DRIVING THE PEOPLE OF THE SOUTH TO THE SEA IF GIVEN THE CHANCE, Mr SOLHEIM ACTIONS WOULD BE AN ASSISTANCE TO THE LTTE TO THIS END. AND NORWAY SHOULD PUBLICALY STATE THAT THEY WOULD TAKE IN ALL THE SINHALESE TO NORWAY (SOME 15 MILLION OF THEM) AND OF COURSE PROVIDE THEM WITH WELFARE TILL THEY SETTLE DOWN, IF THIS EVER HAPPENS DUE TO THE ACTIONS OF THEIR REPRESENTATIVE. IN ALL, BEING A PERSON HAVING FRIENDS IN ALL THE COMMUNITES OF SRILANKA, I CALL UPON THE GOVERNMENT OF NORWAY TO JUSTIFY THIS HAND SHAKE OF MR SOLHEIM.

Finally I must commend the President of Srilanka for withstanding the pressure brought upon by the like of Mr Solheim and her efforts to eradicate any legitimate grievance of the Tamil people and wipe out all terrorist activity in the country.

I hope she would do all she can to this effect with fairness and just to all by enhancing the democratic principals of the land by accepting the oppositions request for independence for Judiciary, Police etc. And the opposition to show that they have the leadership quality and integrity to support the government, at the hour of need of the nation, to eradicate this terrorist menace, beyond their personal gains for political power.

History would no doubt salute the true leaders of our country who has shown leadership within government or in opposition, by their deeds rather than personnel gains, as Sir Arunachalam Ponnambalan, Anagarika Dharmapala and Sir D. B. Jayathilaka like. And of course the SOLDIERS of the Democratic Government of Srilanka who makes the supreme sacrifice.
By Don B Algama

I would like to draw the attention of readers to the excellent article written by Dr. Shantha K. Hennayake, Department of Geography, University of Peradeniya http://www.lankaweb.com/news/features/electoral.html . Although he concentrates on the lack of political representation of the rural poor Sinhalease, the points raised are equally valid for all poor people of any ethnic group in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lankan politics more than 95% of the people are insignificant, just numbers in elections.

De Silva & Nimal R
It is high time both of you stopped this nonsense. If either of you have points to make do so and let the other counter without resorting to personal insults. This is a public forum that others also use.

Dear Editor,

' De Silva has responded again under the caption 'This reply to Nimal R'.

This 'Periya Dorai' seems to be very happy with the title and he can use it as long as he needs such name plates to cover the inadequacies of grey matter. I am not surprised by this man's love for big names etc when he put his his foot in the mouth and exclaimed his ancestors 'cleaned' the boots of that V.I.P Capt Cook from England who landed in Australia.

Be that as may. How ever it is a fact that true patriotic expatriates behave as humble 'podiyans' but not 'Periya Dorai's.

Why digress to Sinhala Urumaya and expect replies from me?.

Why not adderess an open letter to Thilak Karunartne or Champika Ranwaka to get an appropriate reply.

I again challenge you to proceed with the findings from your law books and go ahead with the legal action you proposed as I am very keen to see you in the courts as I need to make sure whether you have any resemblence to Capt Cook and his kukkas.

That can be another subject for a book for a person like Dr Michael Roberts who will be overjoyed to find why some Sri Lankan expats behave like Mahadenamuttas.

You feel that you have cornered me. I am sorry for your poverty in thinking as when exposed always think of this word 'cornered'. Do not worry. When Building Inspectors suddnely become Architects, one does not have to worry about the difference between the word 'exposed'and 'cornerd'.

It is more than enough to feel happy if at least your nose is above the muck when you are seen fighting to keep you head above in garbage hole. Please continue to show your true colours and the spread the smell of your clan globally for the fun of millions who treat your verbiage with utter disdain. '

This reply is to Nimal R

At last we managed to push you to the ultimate end. You are not aware that you put your both feets in your large mouth. Sinhala people in Australia, who think straight are aware that your brain need a replacement. Your ignorance about the Australian - Sri Lankan history is not an excuse for you to write derogatory words and disgracefull comments about people who are aware about the history. It is a known fact that you and your 'goons' are now using the same tactics as "Champaka" to threaten people who do not accept you opinion. You are a "PODIAN" and never will be able to be a "PERIYA DORAI". Good buy and good riddance of the Sihala Urumaya and the supporters in Australia.

Seize The Opportunity to Bring Peace

I am quite dismayed by Sinhala/Sri Lankan patriots living in the safety of foreign countries urging the poor Sinhala soldiers to fight on.

We should remember Vietnam. The might of the Americans could not beat the Vietnamese. America, the richest nation, could afford the cost of such a futile war. Poor Sri Lanka has to beg from the outside world. The locals suffer the rise in cost of living and in addition has to pay towards the pensions of the dead soldiers for years to come. As of now, the next two generations of Sri Lankans will be paying for the soldiers who have died. How many more do we want killed?

It is worth reading the Island's report on 29th Nov about US Asst Secretary's visit to Colombo, in which he said: "I was especially struck, in this regard, by President Kumaratunga’s recent statement in Parliament, when she said, "The real cause of the ethnic crisis is that the minority communities have not had a fair or reasonable opportunity to share in the political, social and economic power structure in this country".

The United States also strongly backs Norway’s efforts to facilitate a dialogue between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LTTE. In this regard, we believe a vital first step is for Sri Lanka’s major political parties to agree to a common, bipartisan approach to these negotiations. We also call upon the LTTE to abandon terrorism and, instead, to pursue its political aim’s through peaceful means. Continued acts of terrorism will only result in the deaths of more innocent people and greater international condemnation of the LTTE."

Editor Lanka Web

De Silva , man from the great tribe has written again. He pretends to be another one but all prudent readers of Lanka Web would be smart to realise it is the same one. He sees ghosts behind every bush like his predecessors and thinks that I do not exist. I am sure that this man is brain dead due to the continuous enlargement of the organ called 'mole' in Sinhala.

Why drag other men and women? Why is this De Silva invent names and engage in shodow boxing. .

Again, I think of his predecessors who get the credit for Australia's new immigration policy , her cities and at least one of the prominent Aussie women runners! .

Mr De Silva, your version of the Australian history is cockeyed as your other statements. Read liberal historians. Whether the people who boarded Captain Cook's ship in Galle or in Tumpane they were 'kallothonis' like the ones who came to Sri Lanka to help the white master to conquer and plunder the empty continent. .

You can stand on your head till the cows come home and tell the world that your predecessors-De Silvas- brought light to Australia. But the truth lies somewhere else. .

According to an old saying the slaves begin to love the chains given by their masters after same has become a part of their identity over a period of time. I had doubts about the meaning of this statement as I thought even slaves have grey matter. .

But, listening to your 'broken record' I now know that black slaves ado the chains of white masters and when necessary will 'drink the water after washing the masters' feet'. Tell me, how does it taste when you have your foot in the mouth so often. .

I do not know what you are talking about 'kele paththara'. In your previous reply you threatened about bringing criminals into justice and I requested you to do so. The idiom 'naya penaya pippuvata gerandiyata behe' well applies to you as you have completely jumped off the track now. I do not wish to waste my time any more on this correspondence but if you wish to reply again I would not fail to respond.

NEGOTIATIONS: HAVE WE NOT LEARNED?

The sinhala nation is yet again at the crossroads of making history. Like before, a war-weary sinhala people have been presented with another possibility of a negotiated settlement. On earlier occasions, a peace treaty that was imposed on our nation cost the lives of hundreds of our brave borthers and sisters at the war front, while the war itself was prolonged by years. A few years after the Indian ordeal, our hopes were yet again re-kindled by dreams of a negotiated settlement, but we were soon awakened to the ruthlessness of our enemy after the loss of equipment and brave fighting men.

We have seen tamil perpetrated violence on too large a scale to listen at this date to trifles of western powers, or to believe in the adequacy of these trifling men. Our people, and our nation has made immense sacrifices for an ideal, an ideal that Sri Lanka, the sacred land of the sinhalese, must be protected from all foes. Thus we must ensure that we merged from this war with the determination that this ideal shall not die.

Even in this time of confusion and anxiety, the Sri Lankan Army, Navy and Air Force continues to fight bravely in the north and east of the nation. Without hesitation they man the forward defense lines which protect our entire nation from tamil terrorism.

If an honourable peace is not attainable from the LTTE, then it is out of a military struggle that we again must re-establish the rules of good faith and the renunciation of force, only then will the great sacrifices that have been entailed upon the sinhala people be fully justified. Let us pray that leaders of our nation will not take our good people down the path of destruction in the name of peace.

A CANADIAN PATRIOT

Another de Silva in Australia.
It is very sad to note that the top rankers in the SPUR (MELBOURNE) who talk about transparency of others hide behind a fictitious name and reply to letter to this column without exposing their true identity. Anyhow Nimal, or ??? you should learn the Australian history before assuming that de Silva join Capt Cook in England. No Nimal or ??? de Silva join the ship in Galle. It is a part of Sri Lanka.

As it seems that your ignorance is floating everywhere when it come to de Silva's and Australian or in fact Sri Lankan history, this is the true history. Capt Cook came to Australia through Ceylon(the name we used to call our Country before we use the current name Sri Lanka), and berth at Galle Harbour (Galle was the main harbour at that time) to collect food and water. At this time some of his men (British's) ran away from the ship and Capt Cook was in need of some people to join him. So One Mendis de Silva and eleven (11) others join the Capt Cooks ship in Galle. NO, they were not VIP's in England. When you are in the front saving and mauling the Sinhala Nation in Australia you should know these things.

If you like to get any further evidence of this please read the information stored in the Govt. Archives. Not only this another 150 (One Humoured and fifty) Sinhalese and others came to Australia in the Second Ship with the Convicts. They were Carpenters, Masons and other tradesmen who helped the settlers to built the Governors Mansion in Parramatta and other government buildings in NSW. They later ran away from their work and join the aboriginal groups and married aborigines. That is why NIMAL we have Perera, Peiris (PERIS), Fernando, Fonseka and also De Silva Aborigines in Australia. For your information Knee-borne Peris grandfather was a Sinhala man from Sri Lanka

If you want to get any more information talk to Mr. Al Grassby former Minister of the Whitlam Government about the Sri lankan involvement in founding this country. (Al Grassby after learning the truth about these facts allowed Coloured Sinhalese (like you and me ) to come to Australia without the blood line.

What a slow learner you are. Capt Cook never treated Aborigines in a bad manner, as you try to explained . Read the Capt Cook's letters and his Log Book. If you like to read anymore about Capt Cook's way of expressing his kind words about Aborigines " read the MABO JUDGMENT" where the Hon Judges are discussing the Capt Cooks letters and how he explained the Aborigines. That is why NIMAL or ??? they gave that Judgement in favour of Mabo under the Common Law we practise in Australia.. Whoever you are Nimal you have the habit of putting "your foot in the mouth". You have done this on many times, whenever you write " JUNGLE PAPERS ( KELA PATHARA)" about anybody who is not toeing your line.

Attention Nimal R and De Silva.

I am one de Zilva whose Great grand father was in the Capt.Cook/De Silva group who set foot on Australian soil.

I know this De Silva clan personally. Few years back one cousin of this De Silva was living in the aboriginal area as one of them because his looks resembled the Aborigines.

He had a cofortable life for almost eight years untill one day the authorities found out his real identity. He was in detention for one month and finally deported to Sri Lanka.

His photograph was in the news. This De Silva is a brillient one. In Singapore he manipulated some how to get into a Swiss flight. Later he did not succeed in Switzerland, but finaly ended up in Canada as a refugee.

This brilliant De Silva is now a very talented fund raiser there. I came to know he is a big shot now for some thing to do with logistics for a Liberation group in South Asia.

Reply to De Silva

Nimal R

It is indeed heartening for us, Sri Lankan 'podiyans' to know that 'De Silvas' came to Australia with Captain Cook who was a V.I.P in England. I presume that 'De Silvas' who came with Captain Cook would have been closely associated with Captain Cook and his party in getting rid of all that was aboriginal in Australia. It is strange that these 'original' De Silvas in Australia, especially the ones who are in New South Wales are heard very often to claim close acquaintance to 'big' people' and privy to their discussions irrespective of these 'big' people's notoriety. Very often, these De Silvas and their likes enjoy the taste of foot in their mouth!. Had these De Silvas done any anti LTTE propaganda in Australia there wouldn't have been a necessity to form a SPUR. Be that as it may.

The De Silva who has replied to my letter definitely must have learnt a trick or two from Captain Cook himself. Otherwise, he would not try to kill two birds with one stone. His miserable attempt to frighten others by quoting criminal law is like Captain Cook and his De Silvas quoting scriptures to Aborigines when they set foot in Australia. I am sure that De Silva who openly claimed his ancestors' proud association to Captain Cook will carry out his mission of bringing the culprits to criminal courts in Australia. I, a podiyan will be there in the courts to see this 'Periya Dorai' in the courts as I am keen to have a first hand knowledge of Cook's friends. Dear Mr De Silva, please go ahead in the name of justice. If you fail us, the law abiding Australians will tell you in English the Sinhala idioms, 'appa kala de putha nokoloth, U nottige puthek' . 'naya penaya pippuvata gerandiyata penaya puppanna behe'.

REPLY TO NIMAL R. FROM MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA

Another de Silva in Australia

Nimal, for your information, the first De Silva came to Australia with Captain Cook. as such De Silva's have more rights than others in this country and they have done more community services than others. You must be a "PODIAN" in the block, otherwise you should have known about de Silva's work since late 1970's. 1983 was a year that your Asoka and Ranjith was not in the forefront of saving the Sinhala Jathiya from LTTE attacks after the Black July incidents in Sri Lanka. So de Silvas took the fight with the LTTE supporters attending their meetings and disrupting all there propaganda work.

Ranjith and Asoka may have done good services to the community to keep the LTTE sympathisers at bay but they couldn't stop their activities in Australia completely. Now they have thrown the BABY with the water by supporting the Sihala Urumaya. I do not think that you are aware that Asoka Subawickrama wrote a letter to the Spur chat site as the Public Officer of the Spur supporting the SU and criticising and damaging the standing of all other parties. So he took the Spur to the centre of the SU by doing so. As the Public Officer he committed a offence where by Spur should have got in to many difficulties if anybody took him as well as the Spur to Courts. Please ask him to read the Section 86, 86.1 and 86.2 of the Criminal Law of Australia to see the gravity of his mistake. This Law is specially referring the Victoria and the computer crime about misrepresentation. What he did was a complete misrepresentation of facts and whereby he tried his level best to destroy the Spur. Even now the facts are in hand to take him to Courts for any person who is willing to do so..When people get blinded by the power they do foolish things.

So when you are new in Australia NIMAL, you may not know the people who took this LTTE fight to their door steps in early part of 1980's.

Nimal R, Melbourne , Australia

"I refer to the article by one De Silva personally attacking Asoka and Ranjith of SPUR, Australia. We have not heard of any De Silva( he may be using a fictitous name) doing any work for Sri Lanka or the community in Australia. How ever most of the Sri Lankans are aware how much Asoka and Ranjith have done to counter LTTE propaganda in Australia as well as other projects carried out by them to help the unity and integrity of Sri Lanka. They are not office bearers of Sihala Urumaya in Melbourne at all. They are only office bearers of SPUR.

It was the Sihala Urumaya branch in Melbourne as well as many other branches through out the world raised funds and contributed to Sihala Urumaya a registered political party (and a necessity of the time) in Sri Lanka. How stupid is it to compare it with funds being sent to ruthless LTTE by various front organisations of LTTE. We have seen seen some people of the calibre of 'De Silva' who show some patriotism in order to gain benefits from what ever the existing governments in Sri Lanka. The worst damage they do is attacking those who are honestly doing some service to their motherland.

Ganesh - United Kingdom

Majority of the contributors to your 'Comments Column' appear to live in overseas countries. They should be able to comprehend the fundamental problems in Sri Lanka in a more a more enlightened way. Some may have been away from Sri Lanka only a few years, some longer like me, nearly forty years. This extract from a book by Lee Kwan Yew, the former Prime Minister of Singapore, would be interesting reading. Extracts from the book: From Third World To First – The Singapore Story: 1965 – 2000 By Lee Kwan Yew

Your opinion is 100% correct!

From Nimal R, Melbourne Australia

Although a frequent visitor, it was only today I read your opinion (copied below) about the crisis in Sri Lanka. You are quite true but it is pathetic what the two leading political parties in Sri Lanka are doing. What other country would allow Norwegians (or the British) to openly rape our motherland. LTTE has always kept to their demands; i.e. (i) North and East should be accepted as Tamil homeland. (ii) All government troops should be withdrawn from their homeland. (iii) Tamil community should be given special recognition. Who ever says what (so called mediators)they never come down on above three demands and if above are agreed what is more there to talk?

"Independent opinion polls published in the press show very clearly over 75% of the people, including many Tamil and most Muslims oppose the 'ethnic regionalisation' of the country. What is needed in Sri Lanka is honest political leadership, which will not blindly pander to minority extremist demands to legitimise an illegal concept and destroy the unitary character of the country, for the sake of remaining in power through the minority vote bank"
