CANADIAN ASSOCIATION SAYS THE LIBERAL GOVERNMENT'S
FOOT DRAGGING MAKES TERRORISTS FUND RAISE OPENLY
By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from
Since Canada has dragged her feet in enacting legislation to suppress
terrorism, front organizations of some of the most brutal and ruthless
terrorist organizations are brazenly and openly raising funds in Canada,
charged Sri Lanka United National Association (SLUNA) of Toronto.
In a letter addressed to Canada's foreign Affairs Minister John Manley
and all his cabinet colleagues the Canadian organization of expatriate
Sri Lankans said Canada has been dragging her feet in enacting legislation
to comply with the UN accord on the suppression of Financing of terrorism
, which was adopted in December 1999 with the consent of Canada.
The SLUNA letter signed by its president, Mahinda Gunasekera drew
the attention of the Canadian government to the recent fund raising
event which took place in Toronto's Kandasamy Temple , which was reported
by the LTTE's own website Eelamnation to have raised 11,000 Canadian
dollars. The fund raising event was organized in the guise of felicitating
a LTTE lyric writer , Kasi Anandan, who composes songs to be used as
the terrorist organization's martial music. Every donor for the LTTE
war chest in return received a book of verses, entitled "Are you a Tamil
or Tamilinglish" written by Kasi Anandan .
"Throw the Sinhalese army out and secure Thamil people's freedom"
were described as aims of the fund raising by Velupillai Thangavelu
, a well known Liberation Tigers fund raiser , who addressed the event.
Thangavelu was second in command to Manickawasagam Suresh, who is currently
under deportation orders by the Canadian government, when the latter
was the President of the World Tamil Movement (WTM) and the Federation
of Canadian Tamils (FACT) for allegedly raising funds for the terrorist
activities of the LTTE. Both organizations have been recognized as front
organizations of the Liberation Tigers by the Canadian Intelligence
"Suresh Manickawasagam," said the SLUNA letter, " yet remains in Canada,
while his fellow travelers are merrily dining and dancing with politicians
and funneling funds raised through criminal and other means to the insurgent
terrorist group known as Tamil Tigers who are wreaking havoc in distant
The letter pointed out that the recent maniacal attack on the International
Airport in Colombo by the terrorists of the LTTE, who continue to receive
funds from Canada, was aimed at not only destabilizing Sri Lanka's economy
but was also directed towards disrupting international air traffic.
The letter described the lethargy of the Canadian politicians to wipe
out terrorist related activities from the soil of Canada as an attempt
merely "to garner ethnic votes supposedly controlled by terrorist front
organizations such as WTM, FACT etc. operating in" Canada.
The letter concluded by charging the Liberal Party government of Canada
for being soft on terrorists,"thereby abandoning its obligations in
terms of international accords."
