Defence forces' new effectiveness

SL defence forces did get a jolt from the Elephant Pas debacle: They seem to be doing just fine now and the LTTE cohorts in SL and overseas having suddenly been converted to 'peacemakers'. A necessity has become a virtue. My first question is:Where were the MIG 27s and other equipment all these years? Were our forces fighting with shotguns? The second question is : Would the Defence ministry lapse into complacency again after the success of the current episode? Behind all these doubts lies the lurking gossip that has been doing the rounds, namely that the war has been kept going to help some people get rich. If such were true then there will be no peace ever and the country will go to the dogs. One thing is certain: the SL Defence establishment beginning from the top must be revamped. If not, Eelam would not be a dream and peace will be a chimera.
