REVD SOBHITHA'S BASHING

Revd Maduluwave Sobhitha Thero, a widely respected monk, is the latest to come out bashing the two major parties who have dominated Sri Lanka politics.

He says the current election is a "contest between liars" and he also says that these parties have not done anything for the last fifty years.

The first proposition is somewhat true. The second proposition ( echo of a cliched Sihala Urumaya argument) is plainly untrue.

Sri Lanka did have basically good governance until about the past decade.There have been heavy investment in infrastructure like irrigation, agriculture, export-led industry, housing, tourism, education, health etc and Sri Lanka had earned a high rating in the Human Development Index of the United Nations.

It is a pity that the intellectual community has not studied the reasons for the breakdown in government over this decade.

It is shallow to bash individuals or to utter platitudes like ("kaba geni deela hotu geni gathth wage") . This is because systemic factors are behind the debacle.

An in-depth study is urgent .
