HIGHWAY ROBBERY - ON SRI LANKAN ROADS?

Prof. Hudson McLean

Sri Lanka Friday, April 5, 2002
LTTE for levying entry tax on Jaffna highway
(The Hindu-05/04/02).

Is the LTTE running out of options to raise funds for their pension plans?
The Solution: - Rob your own Tamil community and hope that they will keep quiet.

In any case why should the LTTE need funds for?

The Top Ten of LTTE have a positive seven digit bank balance. The rest of the infrastructure can start to lead a “normal life” like the rest of the country.

Or have they forgotten what a “normal life” is like?

Blackmail, Extortion, Robbery, Smuggling, Drug Trafficing, Prostitution are the normal means of raising revenue for a terrorist organization. Sri Lanka must not tolerate any of that. We are certain that the Nordic Delegation will agree.

Well, in any case it is much easier to rob and to steal, and specially from your own kith and kin.

It is upto the Norwegians to “Tell” the “Wild Ones” to straighten up and get the legalities right.

THE ROADS AND OTHER PUBLIC PROPERTY BELONG TO THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF SRI LANKA.

And if any one is permitted to charge “tolls” or “taxes” it is the prerogative of the Sri Lankan government.

Running a competitive, non-exclusive, government regulated bus service, may be possible, as a commercial venture, within a similar structure as in the rest of Sri Lanka. But as many have experienced in the past, it is a matter of time before the heavy claws of the LTTE Tiger descends on the poor victims.

Granting of permission for running such an enterprise may be considered if the Scandinavian Peace Monitoring Force agree to supervise the operations on a regular basis.

LTTE seems to be opting for an armchair position in revenue generation. Why can’t they apply their “organising and logistican skills” and the funds, to projects which will create to-;

INVEST IN THE FUTURE

1: Employment - Labour Intensive - such as Farming, Fisheries, Garment manufacturing.

Capital Intensive - IT Software Development

Hotels and Tourism with adventure holidays....?

2: Infrastructure - Roads, Schools, Hospitals, Cottage Industrial Training.
Starting construction companies.

3: Technology - Ship Building and Repairs
Training and employment for the next generation.

LTTE may invest the capital which their Tamil Diaspora have sent for weapons into developing the general welfare of their fellow beings.

Failure to enter into the main infrastructure may mean that in due course, such opportunities may have already been awarded to foreign enterprises for extended periods.

As the Diaspora Screeeeemed during the war, “Save our Homeland”. Now the entire Sri Lanka is FREE from TERROR. Instead of contributing to kill, now the Diaspora have the opportunity to develop the land and its people. And some of them may find a better satisfactory standard of living in Sri Lanka than in the East End of London

The Government of Sri Lanka is not applying any discrimination or constrains on its citizens or indeed on non-citizens, who wish to contribute to the welfare of the Island, and live within a well defined legal framework.

The Tiger will have to show their REAL COLOUR to their supporters and mainly to their Norwegian patrons!
