POWER & DEVOLUTION ONLY BY DEMOCRATIC MEANS, NOT BY DEMANDS.

Prof. Hudson McLean

Is the government led by Ranil Wickremesinghe heading for a "soft sell out" in order to grab the Presidential leadership?

The following articles which appeared in LANKAWEB are beginning to create an atmosphere of treason, if such "fiction" becomes a "fact".

Power for LTTE - (The Hindustan Times-06/04/02)
Omanthai to Muhamalai Bus Service to be operated only by Tamil Eelam - (The LankaWeb-06/04/02)

Once again, the PM should be enlightened on the fact that, the World Order changed dramatically on the 11th September 2001. The "terrorist" is no longer a fashion item in anyone's invitation list.

There is no comparison between the LTTE and the movements which fought for independence in several other countries.

LTTE war against a Sovereign State was illegal, illegitimate, a non-starter from the beginning. All the major democracies led by USA, UK, India, Canada, EU, UN supported this fundamental view.

No cat who was forced to buckle under the thunder from the blast of Sept 11th, can come out of a hole in the wall and start to make demands on the democratically elected government.

Ranil, for the sake of Democracy, should make it very clear from the beginning, that "under his UNF leadership, governance WILL be FIRM and FAIR".

No threats. No demands.

There is no room for blatant dictatorial demands, as the old saying goes, "How long is a piece of string?"

Negotiate a policy of governance and distribution of responsibility!

Otherwise he will soon find out that the proverbial "piece of string" has multiplied and is being pulled from many directions, all at the same time, by different players.

The running of the Island of Sri Lanka is done from the Parliament in Kotte, not from the jungles of Wanni!

The considered opinion is, "Ranil, hold on to your horses, be brave to take a firm stand on policy, for the sake of democracy!"
