PAINS OF DEMOCRACY - LIVELY FORUM AT LANKA WEB
The Sinhala have woken!

By Prof: Hudson McLean"

The quality of debate and colourful opinions expressed on the pages of Lanka Web amply certifies that democracy is alive and humming in Sri Lanka.

When the alarm bells rang, and they did ring loud on September 11th, that woke up the giant USA.

"Invincible" they thought, despite bombing of two US Embassies and a naval destroyer Cole.

But that was away from home!

When LTTE blasted the World Trade Centre in Colombo, America did not wince.

Central Bank of Ceylon got hit, but no Western country cried.

CBK lost an eye. No one gave a second glance.

But it took two towers and 3000 lives to shake America. And now, America has suddenly discovered Sri Lanka.

No plan, however constructed, can be ideal. Even without the Democratic Right of Expression, someone will sigh. But in a democratic country, especially with the mentality of the Asian, the Sinhala or the Tamil will find something to talk about, to object and to complain, even on the most perfect of plans.

Both Ranil Wickramasinghe and President CBK hail from the ruling class. Both feel that it is their inherant right to govern Sri Lanka.

When one compares the two, there is a distinct difference in their basic policies.

Whilst CBK preaches Socialism for the masses and Capitalism for the selected few, Ranil practices Capitalism for the privileged few and Socialism for the rest.

Ranil played one card and he played that well. "PEACE" he said. The timing was perfect. LTTE did not have a chance in hell, with the entire world had turned against the "terrorists".

Ranil grabbed the golden opportunity whilst the President was giving her presentation on how well she was taking care of the Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka on BBC's HARDTalk with Tim Sebastian.

Action. Not Words!

To those who are complaining about "How Ranil Got The TIGER By Its Tail", time will tell, what price or what pleasure the Citizens of Sri Lanka will enjoy.

Till then, make full use of your democratic right. Keep complaining or one might even consider writing a more constructive suggestion to the Prime Minister through LankaWeb!
