IF THINGS CONTINUE AT PRESENT RATE THE SINHALA NATION IS IN DANGER OF EXTINCTION WARNS NOVELIST GUNADASA AMARASEKERABy Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los AngelesSri Lanka's foremost novelist and author Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera warned that the Sinhala nation was in danger of extinction if things continued like under the present government for a period of time. Dr. Amarasekera said the Sinhala nation might not last long if the present trend were to continue unchecked and the nation's enemy was not defeated with a determination. He was addressing a well-attended meeting of the "Chinthana Parshadaya" at the Mahaveli Center, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7. The theme of the meeting was: "The only way to peace is to defeat the LTTE." Venerable Thuruwila Wimaladharma Thero chaired the meeting. Dr. Amarasekera also blamed the previous People's Alliance government for not conducting the war properly that resulted in the current conditions. The well-respected author clarified how no "war" proper had been ever fought against the LTTE. He also described how the Sri Lanka Freedom Party has evolved itself to what he called a "kavandhaya" or a body without a head. He hoped the newly elected Leader of Opposition Mahinda Rajapakse would be able to do something about it. Amarasekera appealed to the genuine national forces to get together to fight the LTTE and Tamil racism in the country as it has got to be defeated to achieve real peace in the country. Dinesh Gunawardane, former Minister of Transport and Leader of the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna though not a speaker at the meeting was seen in the audience listening to the speeches. An appeal was made at the meeting to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, the Mahajana Eksath Peramuna, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and genuine Sinhala organizations and individuals to work together to defeat whom they called the non-national forces which included Norway, some Bishops, the NGO's, some civil societies funded by the Western countries, the Tamil racists and Tamil terrorists. Dr. Nalin De Silva who also spoke at the Mahaveli Center meeting said that W.J.M.Lokubandara of all the people introduced a bill that enabled the Commissioner of Elections to postpone local government elections in the parliament. Dr. Nalin De Silva said, the UNF government under the Premiership of Ranil Wickremesinghe was working according to the agenda of the LTTE and this would deprive the Tamils in the North and the East , besides the Sinhalese and Muslims living there, their democratic right of voting at local government elections and also with the postponement of elections in those provinces the country would have two different sets of laws , one in the East and the North and the other in the other places. He said this would add weight to the LTTE claim for a confederation that was a de-facto Eelam. Mr. Douglas Wickramaratne, President of the Sinhala Association in London was also among the speakers. |
