Development of Trincomalee is not a Colombo Job.

A.A.M.NIZAM, MATARA

TULF the political vanguard and the puppet coterie of the terrorists has objected for governments intention to undertake industrial/development projects in the Trincomalee District. Mr. R. Sambanthan, General Secretary of the TULF and the Trincomalee District MP says that whatever is to be done should be initiated by the people of the area and the time is not yet ripe for big investments in the area. He has said that Tamils who have suffered several decades of discrimination and unequal treatment are not prepared to trust anyone in a hurry and they themselves want to decide their destiny, including their economic future.

In the past, he has pointed out, the beneficiaries of economic development, whether it be in agriculture, industries or fisheries, were not the Tamils but people from outside the region. Explaining that Trincomalee has great potential in port development, agriculture, fisheries, industries, tourism, Mr. Sambandan has said that development must be done in consultation with representatives of the region and they don't want this to be foisted on them from Colombo.

In the meantime reports indicate that there are intensive terrorist buildups in the Trincomalee's Port area where Sri Lanka Navy's biggest base and headquarters of its Eastern Command is located. In the pretext of doing political work, terrorist cadres are reported to be studying about military installations in the area. Since the sellout MOU came into effect the terrorists have opened six offices in the Trincomalee Town and have infiltrated many of its cadres into the town.
