OPEN LETTER TO Mr. WIMAL ADIRIWIRA
Dear Mr. Ediriwira,
Government's "bribes" of luxury plane trips and luxury hotel
rooms for Buddhist monks violate the monks' Vinaya rules
It is doubtful whether it will be possible for Mr. Wickramasinghe to
find some time to answer your letter. Hopefully he will answer you in
the due course. In the mean time I have some comments regarding the
above mentioned subject detailed by you in LankaWeb.
As you know, there are seats reserved for clergy in public transportation
such as busses and trains. In private buses, even though there are no
seats reserved, it is our practice of offering a seat and showing our
respect. It is our intention for monk travelling comfortably. Now the
question - whether the monk is violating Vinaya by accepting the seat
? If so, the monk could refuse the offer.
Therefore, in my view, offering a first class seat or a comfortable
hotel room to a monk by anyone could happen as a respect and it is completely
up to the clergy refusing so called luxury offer if it is against Vinaya.
By not doing so and then complaining civilian who had the good intention
can be a wrong approach.
