SU and HU

Douglas Wickramaratne President Sinhala Association of Sri Lankans in the U.K.

Since my last e-mail dd. 19th Feb. I received many replies from patriots all over the world agreeing with me that the SU " having obstructed the formation of a wider Sinhala Alliance is now attempting to divide the Sangha and the Buddhists." I have also received messages from diehard supporters of the SU (now HU)critcising me for opposing the devious plans of the SU leadership.

I do not wish to engage in mud- slinging nor spend my time replying to every ridiculous charge but will attempt to give a general reply to some issues raised.

Firstly let me state categorically that I do not belong to any political party in Sri Lanka and that I do not blindly follow any political leader. Our Association organised demonstrations against JRs Provincial Councils, I had engaged in a public debate in 1979 in London with Rohana Wijeweera against his then policy towards the Tamil separists demands. In 1985 at the convention of the World Federation of Overseas Sri lankan Associations held at the London Hilton, in the presence of Ven. Madihe Pangaseeha Nayaka Thero ,late MR. Lalith Athulathmudali and Anura Bandaranaike we passed a resolution for the restoration of civic rights of Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike. Our Association was the first to hold demonstrations in London in 1995 against Chandrika's Package. We organised demonstrations and meetings in London and Italy against Ranil's MOU. I mention these only to let the present day 'radicals' know that I am no lackey of any party or leader.

Let us look at some arguments put forward by these die hard supporters of the SU.

1. Parliament is a cesspit, therefore the Bhikkus should enter it to clean it.
2. A bhikku called Samitha is already in parliament.
3. Many religious leaders like the Ayatollas, Archbishop Makarios and Aristide have led their countries, so why not Bhikkus.
4. Ralph Nader fought against the might of the Democrats and Republicans.
5. Therapuththabaya fought in King Dutugemunu's Army.

With refernce to the above justifications-
1. Would anyone in his right mind jump into a cesspit?
2.Samitha did not contest to save Buddhism but should we emulate one rogue marxist monk ?
3. Do we want our Bhikkus to end up as mad Mullahs or a Makarios whose policies led to the eventual division of Cyprus?
4. Ralph Nader's intervention led to the defeat of Al Gore and the election of a Christian Fundamentalist President.Remember Florida where Bush won by 577 votes and Nader received 97488 votes and more than half of them said they would normally have voted for Al Gore.
5. Therapuththabaya disrobed first and after the victory entered the Sasana again.

Please patriots draw the right conclusions.

Dr. Harischandra Wijetunga (Lanka newspaper 11 Jan. 2004) gave details of how he was offered Rs. 50 million and that Champika Ranawaka wanted to contest the presidency from the Bhoomi Putra Party. Dr. H.W said the money that he refused went to the SU and that the SU had become a cat's paw of the church. What he said came true just one month later.

Just ask youselves where these monks were in the last 25 years. Did they oppose the ' packages or the MOUs'.Is it not strange that they suddenly woke up from their slumberland after the death of Soma Hamuduruwo.None of these bkikkus will get elected but they are there to prevent the annihilation of the most treacherous government in our history that was in power for the last two years.

Look at the list of some supporters of the Bhikku front--Sunday Leader,Jayalath Jayawardana,Jayadeva Uyangoda, Tamil net, BBC Sandesaya and Ranil's media men.It is beyond belief that these monks are so gullible. SU leadership have alredy created a divisions among patriots and Bhikkus. The likes of Lalith Kotelawala must be laughing from his backside. Do not be misled by lofty sermons. Lord Buddha did not claim the throne from his father King Sudhdhona. Our bhikkus preserved the Sasana for 2500years by advising the kings and not by attempting to usurp the crown. Ask these monks to withdraw now before further damage is done to the Sasana.
