UDUWE DHAMMALOKA OF THE JATHIKA HELA URUMAYA ALLEGES THAT SIHALA URUMAYA WERE OPPORTUNIST SELF SEEKERS WHO WANTED PERSONAL GAINS THROUGH NATIONALISM

By Walter Jayawardhana reporting from Los Angeles

The internal clashes between the old Sihala Urumaya members and the bhikku politicians of the Jathika Hela Urumaya have reached its climax making the JHU spokesman Buddhist monk parliamentarian Uduwe Dhammaloka to declare that people connected to the Sihala Urumaya were opportunist self-seekers who were making use of national issues for their own ends.

As a result of these acrimonious clashes already a parliamentarian of the Jathika Hela Urumaya , Kolonnawe Sumangala has resigned his parliamentary seat declaring his retirement in politics in disgust.

Spokesperson Uduwe Dhammaloka, speaking from his Colombo seven mansion declared that Alawwe Nandaloka, another Buddhist monk would be appointed by the party to the vacant parliamentary seat.

Uduwe Dhammaloka alleged that although Sihala Urumaya had earlier publicly declared that their party was donated to the JHU no such thing ever took part and what happened was that always Sihala Urumaya members made it feel that they were present and in fact they were trying to control the JHU. He said all this time he was silent on this matter since it was not nice to carry tales out of school. He was speaking to the Sinhala service of the BBC.

He said he refused to attend the last Central Committee meeting held last week since those meetings served no purpose as they were full of acrimonious verbal clashes between the JHU bhikkus and the Sihala Urumaya members. He pointed out that always those verbal clashes and arguments ended with no compromise.

Accusing the Sihala Urumaya never left politics handing over the JHU to the bhikkus as promised Uduwe Dhammaloka said that there were few people who would gain their own ends by raising national issues and speaking about nationalism. He said he wanted to alert the whole nation about these opportunists making use of nationalism.

He said there had been no agreement to let Sihala Urumaya run the JHU from the beginning and that’s exactly what they were attempting to do from the beginning.

He categorically said that they could not certainly go forward with such elements on their intended journey.

Jathika Hela Urumaya , since its very inception has been riddled with unending controversy. Immediately after the election a section of the Buddhist monks accused another section of Buddhist monks of kidnapping a Buddhist monk parliamentarian and forcing his resignation for denying to support moves of the Ranil Wickremesinghe led opposition including LTTE led Tamil parties to topple the present government. They alleged Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara’s connivance in the alleged resignation. The Buddhist monk himself said he was forced to resign. Champika Ranawaka , who is allegedly in the midst of the present controversy was alleged to have a hand in the kidnapping of the monk before the resignation.

An email distributed by an opposing factor alleged Champika Ranawaka of ruining the Jathika Hela Urumaya and called him a Palliye Pilliyak. (A spy of the Church)
