Ama Wessa was a great successOver 15,000 youths from different parts of the country had gathered to Vihara Maha Devi Park by 7am on 14th January. They want to observe eight percepts or Ata Sil in protest of westernised Valentine Day celebrations. This event was organized by the JSS. The program included sermons, discussions, meditation and yoga exercises. The panel discussion on "Love, Family and the Society" made a comparison between western values and Buddhist values. Ven Harispattuwe Ariyawansalankara, Prof Oliver Abeynayake, Dr S Kariyawasam and Dr Chandana Jayaratne were the penalists. Mr Dayan Witharana and Ms Deepika Priyadarshani Pieris joined them as artists. At the end, there was a musical show presented by leading artists in the country including Nanda Malani & Victor Ratnayake. A cultural show was presented by Lionel Ranwela Folk Art Centre. Adding concluding remarks, Ven Athuraliye Ratana Thero told, "Youths in the most of Asian countries showed their protest to Valentine Day being involved in violent activities. That was the case in our neighbouring countries such as India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. But our protest was peaceful and more constructive. I think today we set an example to the rest of the world". |
