Birds With Same Feathers Flocked Together

Asoka Perera PhD Toronto

It has been getting more clear now that the JHU has been made born to destroy the progressive forces which came to power on April 02. The business tycoons of pawnbrokers, bookie brokers and arm dealers together with the support of Sihala Urumaya poured millions of rupees to form this monk wing of UNF to function as a collector of frustrated UNF fall outs in preventing falling them into the UPFA reservoirs and finally bring them back to the UNF-LTTE-SLMC solidarity in the parliament. The forces, which could have been amicable and packed together in the interests of the national demands, have been made turned against each other by these destructive elements. They pushed these saffron robbed political minnows to the political waters of Sri Lanka without letting them know the depth. The immediate reaction in the parliament was their inability to understand and act under complex and decisive situations and ultimately branded themselves as traitors and betrayals by nation. The protest campaign led by Champika and coworkers of JHU has nothing to say to justify these monks act rather than selling their sentimental and impulsive political slogans such as Bravo Thero and JVP thugs attacked on JHU etc.

Chamipika's political activities and propagation of his political life have been so controversial, disputed and opportunistic in the history. He made his first political amalgamation with JVP and was highly active under the banner of the Deshapremi Sishya Viyaparaya when he was a student of the University of Moratuwa in eighties. He represented Inter University Student Federation (ANTHARE) in crucial meetings to discuss with the SLFP to field a common candidate in the presidential election, which was due on 1989. I can testify the behaviour of this political character, as I was too actively involved in university politics at the University of Colombo as a student and later as a junior academic staff member of the Faculty of Science during this period. When the JVP was militarily crushed by UNP in 1988/89 periods he formed his own political forum of green-faced Janatha Mithuro with some of the associates he had from the university life. I don't need to explain how this Janatha Mithuro worked and launched their poster campaigns in Sri Lanka in early nineties. Professor Nalin de Silva for whom I have a great respect as a university teacher, mentor and philosopher of Jathika Chinthanaya who knows Champika better, reported a summery of his activities on April 04, 2004 Sunday Divaina which he has not yet denied. With the association of Thilak Karunarathne and S.L Gunasekara they formed present Sihala Urumaya. Every one in Sri Lanka knows what happened to S. L. Gunasekera, a great defender of Sinhalese and territorial integrity of Sri Lanka against LTTE. Having rejected this Sihala Urumaya in 2002 general election by people he continued his opportunistic and betrayal politics against PA and JVP. Until the sudden and mysterious death of Ven Soma Thera the politics of Sihala Urumaya were confined to lethargic activities. They organized a bogus trip to Manirasakulam camp erected by LTTE in the government-controlled areas in Trincomali district (they can probably now ask LTTE to dismantle this camp peacefully). Sihala Urumaya cunningly came forward to wrap the reawakened spirit of Sinhala Buddhists around them, which sprang island wide as a result of Ven Soma Thera's death. The opportunistic political career of Sihala Urumaya deceived the people and decided to field monks in the election fray who came forward to lead the people to fight against the unethical conversion of Buddhists into Christianity and who joined with people showered to Colombo to mourn the late Ven Soma Thera. The money investors and SU traitors should take up the responsibility of making our most venerated monk generation discredited in the interests of their selfish political motives.

The monk MPs of JHU, who repeatedly told their main duty was to voice in the parliament as advisories to two main parties, have now embraced with separatist enemies. They have shown greater inability to identify the common enemy in the context of current political dynamism and fallen into the hands of separatist solidarity. The centre line politics of JHU is nowhere within the aspiration of common people in Sri Lanka. I still believe that it is not too late for these monks of JHU to give up hatred and revenging politics within their group members and against UPFA and join hands with the progressive forces in UPFA to serve better our nation. Of course I don't underestimate your voice against Chandriks's invitation of Norway in the peace process but you could not let your strength and energy to empower the reactionary forces of the enemy in this regard. You can better pressurize Chandrika in a meaningful way to keep the hands out of Norway inside the UPFA political solidarity and discuss a long lasting solution to the LTTE problem. You cannot continue with your demand of withdrawing Norway as a facilitator in the peace process if UNF-LTTE solidarity comes into power as they are well set with the international web of anti-Buddhist and pro-Christianity movements. You would probably go against nominally in such a situation but the ultimate result would be so disastrous to the country. As a practical resolution to this complex situation I would suggest JHU monks to make their minds up to take up few important ministerial portfolios such as Buddha Sasana, cultural affairs and bring the anti conversion bill in the parliament in a respected way. Please try to understand your responsibility and commitment to serve our nation in this eleventh hour. Great Buddhist qualities like scarification, courage and determination will lead you to the final destination. You will be better accredited by peace loving people of Sri Lanka. This is the only way that you could compensate the sin you have committed by betraying our great social and cultural history. My dear JHU Hamuduruwane, see the invisibles, do the impossibles and be incredible. May triple gems bless to everybody
