A book on Business Information
Technology by a Sri Lankan
Prof. Sunanda Degamboda
of University of Kelaniya -"Mr. Abeywickrama, as a young author,
has aptly demonstrated his ability to organize and carve out the important
knowledge that should go to entrepreneurs, those who are less aware
of the opportunities information technology offers them in particular,
in a simple but convincing manner. The other larger segment that could
be benefited by this book is the hundreds and thousands of secondary
school and university students, who can speedily acquire a base knowledge
and some skills in computing"
"A bit of BIT" is a collection of articles written
by Yasas Vishuddhi Abeywickrama on the subject of Business Information
Technology.
Since IT is an inevitable part in the modern business environment,
its application in the commercial world at large is becoming an area
of strong interest. This book is an attempt to shed some light on this
interesting subject in a Sri Lankan context and with very few technicalities.
This is also the first book of its kind by a Sri Lankan author even
though the subject has been seriously addressed by many authors in the
other parts of the world.
Most of the articles included in the book were previously published
in newspapers and on the web. Two of the articles were submitted, accepted
and published at the International Business Information Management Associations
(IBIMA) Conference on Information Management in Modern Enterprise. However,
some sections of these articles have been modified specifically for
this book so that they are suitable and digestible to a larger audience.
The book cannot be considered as a study text on the subject of BIT.
Nevertheless, it can be used to improve the knowledge on BIT and its
applications, since it covers a considerable breadth and in some instances
a lot of depth on the subject. It can be recommended even for a novice,
to obtain an overall picture of the nature and capabilities of Information
Technology and will be a very good information source for students.
The author is a product of Ananda College, Colombo and holds an honors
degree from the University of Colombo in Computer Science. He currently
works for Virtusa, a Premier US based Software Company possessing over
two years of work experience both in Sri Lanka and the USA. Yasas is
currently in UK working for a project of British Telecom serviced by
Virtusa. He has also gained business knowledge through CIMA studies
where he received an international award for his efforts in IT, Management
and Business at the CIMA Financial Management Awards 2003, held in London,
UK becoming the first Asian to achieve this height.
