ACT NOW TO SAVE SRI LANKA
Dr. Asela Karunanayake
New Zealand
The brutalities of the Tiger terrorists are growing and
seem to be increasing daily. It has now started massacring unarmed civilians
in the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka. The list of murders
committed on innocent civilians on the 25th of April is as follows.
*Six youth were dragged from their paddy fields and
shot dead by the LTTE in Kalyanapura, Gomarankadawala,
*a woman was hacked to death in Kawanthissapura, Serunuwara
and when the home guards retaliated, the terrorists had fled sparing
the lives of a few others,
* a mother and a 2year old child were killed while
the child was breast fed in Kaduruwela Polonnaruwa as a retaliation
for the arrest of LTTE carders who had been hiding in the hut of the
victims and
* two men from Dutuwewa Kebilithigollawa were shot
by the LTTE terrorists.
These have been the tactics of this brutal ruthless organization
who have a notorious background of being responsible for the genocide
of several Sinhala and Muslim villages in the North and the East of
Sri Lanka, Dollor and Kent farm incidences being the worst of the lot.
This is done in the face of severe restrain shown by the Sri Lankan
Army obeying the Cease Fire Agreement. The recent spate of violence
by the LTTE has two main motives. One, with the idea of chasing away
the people from border villages thereby expanding the Eelam
territory, adhering to their strategy of ethnic cleansing. The other,
aimed at provocating the civilians and creating ethnic disharmony with
the intention of triggering another communal clash, the result of which
could be manipulated to the advantage of the LTTE globally.
It is the duty and the responsibility of a government to protect its
people and ensure their safety and no agreement or any other pact could
compromise this. The Sri Lankan government has to make sure that its
people are protected from the barbaric terrorists who are only interested
in blood shed and violence. It can no longer stay behind the shield
of the Cease Fire Agreement and ignore the atrocities of the terrorists.
This will only make its people vulnerable targets to blood thirsty tigers
and victims of the dirty game of The making of Eelam- dividing
Sri Lanka. If the killings continue in this manner and no effective
measure is taken to prevent this latest wave of crimes by the LTTE,
it will cause a sense of insecurity among the people and they will have
to take measures to protect themselves. This situation will pave way
to racial intolerance and communal clashes. In such an eventuality,
the International Community, Co chairs of the Donor Group to Sri Lanka
and Norway have to take responsibility because they were twisting the
arm of the Sri Lankan government to the maximum to tolerate the animosities
of the LTTE without retaliating.
When one group is targeted by armed terrorists in a situation where
they are helpless and do not get the legitimate protection from the
state, they will be forced to find their own way to survive and avoid
being annihilated. The government has been adopting the strategy of
Masterly Inactivity and pleading to the International Community for
advice up to now, will have to urgently start flexing its muscles to
prevent such a situation. The government of Sri Lanka would not be found
guilty for acting in good faith to protect its masses than to give-in
to a bunch of terrorists. It is not unfair for the government to ask
for strict measures against the LTTE from International Community, Co
chairs of the Donor Group to Sri Lanka and Norway who have been evidently
partial towards the terrorists up to now. If not they will be responsible
for all the civilian lives lost due to the brutalities of the Tiger
terrorists who have committed enough acts of terror with in the last
couple of months to re define them as one of the worlds worst group
of Terrorists. We all plead to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who really
is a true patriot to act now to bring an end to this LTTE curse and
let the people of Sri Lanka live in dignified peace.
The latest news of the Sri Lankan Army Commander being critically injured
by a suicide bomber gives ample evidence beyond doubt to prove that
the LTTE is the worlds worst terrorist group. This incidence sounds
a loud alarm indicating the need to destroy the LTTE terrorists and
is so loud that the government and the rest of the world cannot ignore(They
did not read the earlier alarms that rang with the murders of the Sri
Lankan Foreign Minister and the two heads of the army intelligence)
. Perhaps this will trigger the cascade of events that is needed to
hunt down and destroy the terrorists. Let us hope that Sri
Lanka gets all the help and the strength from the rest of the world
in their effort to eradicate terrorism from the face of the earth.
