Response to Gareth Evans on Limits of State SovereigntyIra de Silva St. George Street. London, Ontario, Canada,August 2,2007 Hon. Gareth Evans Dear Mr. Evans: I read your lecture and what was most striking to me was the double standard by a so-called "first world" ex-politician when dealing with the "third world". It smacks of condescension and a we are holier than thou attitude. As an Australian politician and a former member of the Australian Labour Party I expected that you would apply the same reasoning that Australians have applied and are applying in Australia today - namely that terrorism must be stopped at any cost. Your government has just recently detained an Indian doctor against whom it is now said, there is no evidence that he was linked with the attempted terrorist acts in the U.K. Even after he was released, just yesterday the Australian government stated that it was going to pursue their investigation and Mr. John Howard stated that he did not believe that there was any reason for an apology as terrorism must be dealt with. If that is the policy of Australia I believe you owe Sri Lankans an apology for your partisan, biased statements and an acknowledgment that as you were paid for the lecture you were merely representing the point of view of your client, an NGO that is well known in Sri Lanka to be in the pay of foreigners to support the LTTE against the government and people of Sri Lanka. When there is a "terrorist" threat in the U.K., people are arrested as far away as Australia. However when the Government of Sri Lanka attempts to deal with terrorists who have been terrorising Sri Lankans for the last 30 years, ably assisted by the Government of India who created the Tamil terrorists to destabilize Sri Lanka, you come to the rescue of Tamil terrorists as their white knight in the guise of an NGO. I assume that as an Australian you believe in democracy. I have a simple
question for you . Do you not believe that it is the duty of any government
to defend it's population and country from any attack? Australia does. Do you? Today the whole world is supposed to be fighting
terrorism. Sri Lanka has been dealing with the most ruthless terrorist
organization in the world, a group that invented and perfected the art
of suicide bombing (some of those who financed and helped in these suicide
bombings live in your home country but you did nothing). Australia wholeheartedly supported the U.S. and the U.K. in their invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan supposedly to root out terrorists and protect the world from future terrorist attacks - you were a parliamentarian at the time of this adventure. Is it not the height of deceit on your part to attempt to pave the way for "international intervention" in Sri Lanka when all that the government is doing is to protect it's population from the murderous Tamil Tigers? When are you going to lead the charge for international intervention to protect the Iraqi and Afghan populations from the Australians, U.S. and British? Your ignorance and bias has been exposed just as the foreign funded NGO agenda in Sri Lanka. Although I am sure you will not be swayed by my comments because I am not paying you to do so, at least be aware that all Sri Lankans are not stupid or traitors. Yours truly, Ira de Silva
