It reflects many current socio-political concerns. These include continuing Dalit oppression and the related emancipation politics, politics of caste and reservations, the perfidies of power that punctuate the functioning of Indian democracy at every turn through pervasive corruption, criminality and related evils. Its theme is current affairs with sensitivity to socio-political history where necessary. The book emphasises the need for redefining the contents and contours of Indian democracy for ushering in a more inclusive secular and pluralistic polity and society. P. RADHAKRISHNAN is a Professor of Sociology at the Madras Institute
of Development Studies. His research experience spans more than two
decades. He has published widely. His publications include Progress
Towards Education for All: The Case of TamiI Nadu (as part of Government
of India's input to the World Summit on Education, held in April 2000
at Dakar), and Peasant Struggles, Land Reforms, and Socia/ Change: Malabar
1836-1982. He has to his credit several other publications, which include
articles in edited books and leading journals, research notes, working
