South East Business Lions of Melbourne , have done it again

By (LCSEB) Melbourne

The Lions Club of South East Business (LCSEB) in Melbourne has initiated a major project towards preventing the incidence of cervical cancer in women of Sri Lanka . This project has been titled SSToPCancer and entails women being given the opportunity, and encouraged to undertake a pap smear screening test with a view to early detection of any signs of the dreaded cancer. This opportunity is to be provided at no cost to all women, and hopes to include a mobile screening unit to reach remote areas of the country.

In essence, the LCSEB will initially raise funds and provide equipment and training facilities in the teaching hospitals of Kurunegala and Galle . The Ministry of Health and Nutrition in Sri Lanka has undertaken to provide the building infrastructure to establish these screening units in the two hospitals. It is proposed that this project will be extended to all parts of Sri Lanka over a period of time, as funds become available. The LCSEB has commenced the fund raising towards this project and is calling on all expatriate Sri Lankans around the globe to support this project which will deliver significant socio economic benefits to the country.

In order to get the project off the ground, the LCSEB hosted a dinner at the Hilton Hotel in Melbourne on 27 July 2007 , where the Honorable Minister for Health and Nutrition, Mr Nimal Siripala de Silva was in attendance to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of Sri Lanka and the LCSEB. The guests at the dinner included the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Australia , representatives from the Sri Lanka Australia Business Council, leading Australian gynaecologists who have pioneered a similar project in Australia with great success, leading medical staff from Sri Lanka , members of other Lions clubs and Rotarians who have pledged their support to this worthwhile cause.

The President of the LCSEB, Mr. Jayantha Peries in welcoming the Minister and other guests, acknowledged the support they have promised to make the project a success. The project chairman Mr. Daya Fernando and the project co-ordinator Marianne Misso gave some background to the project that was initially mooted by a leading Sri Lankan gynaecologist in Melbourne, Dr. Daya Jayasinghe, who was also present.

The Hon. Minister in his address made a poignant reminder to all the expatriate Sri Lankans in Australia and other parts of the world of the free education that Sri Lanka gave them to become successful citizens abroad. He appealed to all those Sri Lankans to ?repay? Their motherland by assisting in this project financially. The Hon. Minister made an emotional plea to the Australian guests to understand the difficult circumstances that Sri Lanka is currently going through, particularly with respect to terrorism. In spite of these difficulties, ?the government continues to provide free education to all levels, right through to university? He proudly announced to the guests to a standing ovation.
