After a week of absolute horror and mayhem in the outskirts of Colombo, when innocents have been butchered by terrorists masquerading as freedom fighters, the step up of violence by LTTE in the East has sent an alarm of the outcome to be expected.

The bus bombs killing 21 persons are responses to the pressure that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have been under these past months, since the security forces resumed operations in the districts of Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee to free thousands of civilians held captive by the LTTE.

A number of LTTE camps have been captured during the past months and the security forces have been precise and intrusive in these operations.

Mean while SL Air Force fighter jets made few sorties at identified LTTE artillery positions at Verugal, Batticaloa on 13th January, at 11.00 a.m.

The air raids were resumed following continuous LTTE artillery barrages at Mankerni, some 11.4 miles south-west of Vakarai, Batticaloa.

Military sources said, the LTTE launched artillery mounts were silenced, and added that the casualties and damages inflicted to the enemy are yet to be confirmed.

Earlier, a SL Army soldier succumbed to his injuries due to LTTE launched artillery fire at Mankaerni, during the forenoon hours.

Another stock of food items was shipped to Jaffna as a special remedial action to avoid any inconveniences that can rise during the festive season Thaiponggal (harvest festival), a Presidential Secretariat release said yesterday.
