BRING BACK MARVAN!By M D P DISSANAYAKEThere has been a considerable outcry for the way in which Marvan has been treated in the recent past. Sanath Jayasuriya was given similar treatment in recent years by a forced "retirement". An astute player and a great skipper like Marvan should have been included in players 11 in the recently concluded World Cup. Instead he had to warm up benches. The mental agony thus far given to Marvan is very discriminatory. Lets not forget, at the end, Sri Lanka did not win the World Cup, we may not get even to the second round in the next World Cup if the likes of Sanath, Vaas, Murali retires. Mahela is a flop, he has lost his stamina, but speak English very well ( ideal for a Sports Commentators role!). As I have said in one of my previous articles, the day Sanath fires, we win. The day he fails, all others are like a bunch of penguins in the Philip Island of Victoria. Mahela's mind set is not in the game anymore. He is in his own world, not mixing with the team and unable to provide much needed leadership. Now he wants to join the circuit in England. Where is his commitment for the game? In these circumstances, it is time to make radical changes for the team composition, including naming Marvan as the Skipper and Kumar as his assistant. This will provide great opportunity for Mahela to talk with his Bat and come up with some runs. It will also give the taste of 'downgrading', something Mahela and Asantha de Mel gave to Marvan. Asantha de Mel has neither played much cricket nor performed well during
his period, such a person to be at the helm is an insult to the game
itself. |
