CLINTON CHARITY GROUP INCLUSIVE OF CHANDRIKA KUMARATUNGA TO MEET IN HONG KONG IN DECEMBER

BY Walter Jayawardhana

Former Sri Lankan President, who has become a controversial figure in the island republic's politics will join former US President Bill Clinton in an Asian fundraising program which has been called an Asian version of the Charity Forum .

Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, president of the Philippines , Lee Kuan Yew, the first prime minister of Singapore , Chandrika Kumaratunga, former executive president of Sri Lanka , and Quoc Trieu Nguyen, Vietnam 's minister of health. Dr. Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, will be among many others in the Asian Charity Forum scheduled to be held in Hong Kong on December 2 and 3 2008.

The Asian version of the charity forum has been fashioned after the Clinton global initiative that calls world leaders to New York to raise money for humanitarian purposes all over the world. The agenda of such activities is controlled by mainly Western nations.

Most of the funds raised by this effort will be controlled ultimately by non-governmental organizations (NGO's).

Referring to those civilian organizations Clinton recently said, that there will be "holes in the fabric" of Asian society "that can only be filled by civilian action."

Leading businessmen and government leaders are expected to pledge and showcase grants for projects in education, energy, public health and other areas at this Hong Kong meeting.
