POWER OF CORRUPT MINISTERS

ASOKA S.

According to a to recent news article two police inspectors attached to the Bribery Commission who were investigating a powerful ruling party Minister have been transferred to Vavuniya potentially to meet their death.

In all 20 ministers are under the radar of the Bribery Commission for possible corruption. The minister in question happen to own a property worth RS 50 million and the BC was trying to find out where the money came from.

Now my question is don't we boast a whole system of Justice that is supposed to address such issues in our well publicized democracy. I am not sure who the bribery commission reports to; whether it is to our parliament or the executive or the minister of justice but the whole thing stinks to the high heavens. I can only feel pity for our once proud motherland who have been gradually degenerated to such sad level of chaos. This takes me to a very valid question that some reasonable Lankans seem to ponder; are we ready as a nation to handle democracy or we are better suited to be run by a dictator who might inject a bit of justice and fairplay after all.

Millions of Lankans are scraping the bottom just to survive. Millions of educated Lankans are leaving their beloved country to escape poverty. Millions of young mothers are leaving their little babies to be servants to rich arabs for almost a slave wage. Millions more are starving. Our infrastructure is crumbling. Our teachers have to resort to private tuition to survive. Our elderly are hopelessly hanging on to their children for their medicine to live. While all this misery is around us, the very people we elect to put things right are robbing us. What on earth is this madness and what the heck is the leadership doing to correct this?

True there is a war. True also that it was not only Prabhakaran who made a fancy living out of the war but also dozens of politicians and their henchmen too. But robbing the nation by the very people who we elect to create a just society and take us to prosperity is crime ultimatum and has no excuse for the ruling party from the very top to bottom. No wonder we get ridiculed by other nations to put our house in order.

President Rajapaksha has carried out his constitutional responsibilities well by taking the war to the murderous tigers. He has earned respect of his people for doing a part of his job well so far. Now is the time that he need to step into address the corruption menace with the same vigor as he did with the war. He need to bring the Bribery Commission directly under his command. With Presidential power blessing the Bribery Commission, he should be able to charge the said political crooks for "interfering into justice system." This may end up opening a big can of worms but that is one of the reasons why President was vested with such immense power. To effectively rule Lanka with Justice for all; not for a few high and mighty and well connected.

It is time to rid our legislature of roaches, rats, vermin, jackals and foxes so that once again it deserve to be called the supreme legislature with pride and justice suitable for lions.
