Is JVP Somawansa Amarasinghe's Mafia Clan, or a Democratic Political Party ?

By Charles.S.Perera

JVP is more a Mafia Clan than a Democratic Political Party. It became evident since Wimal Weerawansa's speech in the Parliament, that JVP has thugs-( fights between opposing JVP members in Halawatha), thieves –( cars belonging to members of the opposing faction stolen), and pistol gangs (- death threats to Wimal Weerawansa).

Prabhakaran is the leader of the terrorists, but his followers, were more free than the members of the JVP. Thamil Selvam, Soosai, Nadaraja and others did not go to their leader each time they had to make a statement to a visiting delegation or the foreign press. But, one gathers from what Wimal Weerawansa said, that even the propaganda Secretary has to say only what Amarasinghe allowed him to say.

Somawansa Amarasinghe is a dangerous political leader, who reminds one of a similar leader during the World War two in Europe, and his image photographed at the press conference with his hand outstretched with a finger pointing at the audience, with a shrivelled unholy face, only confirmed it.. He had two Central Committee members Vijitha Herath, and Lal Kantha, flanked on either side of him without even a smile in their faces in military rigidity.

The Leader of the JVP keeps with him secret documents to inculpate his Central Committee Member, which could be produced when the time comes to black mail them to silence. It was said, that D.S.Senanayake had similar ploy. He kept with him damning evidence against his Cabinet Ministers with which he could blackmail them to stay together. It had been said that such documents showing Commissions received on purchase of tractors, enabled him get GG Ponnambalam to stay within the fold. Lenin did not resort to such lowly means even though it is said that Stalin had Burgled Banks to provide funds for the party.

Somawansa Amarasinghe seems to be taking Communist Russia under Stalin for a model. He was a miserable leader who sent his death squad to hunt Trotsky and assassinate him. One cannot now hark back to the past to take USSR under Stalin as a role model to set up new political parties in Sri Lanka. The members of the JVP should wake up from being mesmerised by a failed political theoretician, and throw him out and set up a more democratic Central Committee.

If JVP were to come into power with Somawansa Amarasinghe as its leader, he would be a Sri Lankan Pinochet. Somawansa did not come off well as a credible leader of a Marxist Political Party by calling a press conference immediately after Wimal Weerawansa's speech delivered in Parliament, when he stretched his hand with his finger pointing at the audience to say that he has rest house bills of Weerawansa…….

Wimal Weerawansa should not go back to the JVP as long as the Party is led by Somawansa. Wimal Weerawansa is by far the best to lead the JVP. Though Anura Kumara Dissanayake has the ability take over the leadership of the party, he along with Lal Kantha are already in the UNP camp.

Wimal Weerasinghe has a good head and speaks from his heart . He is sincere and honest. He may even be fit enough to replace the late Mr.Fernandopulle. Good command of knowledge is no sine qua non to be a Minister. A person who knows Sinhala well is already qualified to speak at any International Forum.
