LET EASTERN PROVINCE BE A BEACON OF DEMOCRACY, DEATHKNELL FOR TERRORISM AND SYMBOL OF NATIONAL UNITY

A.A.M.NIZAM MATARA.

The reactionary and terrorist ruffians who vacillate to accept the fact that the Eastern Province has been liberated from the oppressive control of the ruthless tiger terrorists made every effort to negate the effect of this liberation, obliterate the heroic sacrifices made by our gallant security forces, reverse the present status quo and reinstall the terrorist authority in the province through the recently concluded Eastern Provincial Council Election. The long queues of women, youth and elderly people peacefully and composedly awaiting to vote as shown by electronic media including the terrorist biased BBC nullifies the spate of stage-managed criticisms being made by the UNP-SLMC combine which in all purpose was a ruse to allay demands for the UNP leader to relinquish leadership of the party after his 15th election defeat.

It is the bounded duty of the government now to defeat all vicious attempts being made by the vested interests and politically vanquished elements to espouse racism, sow communal hatred and even to foster ethnic clashes to shatter the peace and harmony prevailing in the East. The massive approval given by masses in the election endorsing the splitting of Northern and Eastern Provinces, rejecting terrorism and the homeland concept, expressing people's resolute desire for democracy and peace, and squashing the sole representative claim by the terrorists should be safeguarded at any cost and under all circumstances.

The elections were held for the first time in 20 years in this area a large part of which was under the jackboots of the the world's ruthless terrorist outfit and people under these areas were denied their basic human rights, children the right to education, freedom of movement without payment of exorbitant taxes, and even the youth to tie the nuptial knot without the explicit approval the terrorist area leaders.

It was claimed that in the 1977 General elections, Tamil population in the Eastern Province overwhelmingly voted for the TULF and endorsed the Vaddukkodai Resolution calling for segregation of Sri Lanka and declare the Northern and Eastern Provinces as a separate Tamil State.
The terrorist outfit resolutely and stubbornly maintained that Northern and Eastern Provinces is a single unit of non-negotiable terroritory representing the Tamil Homland, and Trincomalee is the Capital City of the Eelam State.

Meanwhile, the so-called champions of Human Rights the neo-colonialist appendages of the west, the double-tongued western nations, Ambassadorial pirates, NGO vultures and treacherous political opportunists led by the opposition leader and collaborated by some new found allies Jeykill and Hydes (Re Miguel Dawal Daniels) charged the government of gross human rights violations and indiscriminate treatment of minorities and the need to introduce international mechanisms to monitor the so-called human rights violations.

It was under such conditions, and having undergone a gruesome and miserable life for over two decades a majority of the masses in the Eastern Province, with earnest desire for embracing democracy, and willing to be partners in the massive development drive underway in the three districts following the liberation, reposed their unflinching trust in the government and elected the candidates put forward by the government thereby ensuring a solid victory for the government.
The pratfallen vanquished cliques witout gracefully accepting the people's verdict and upholding democratic principles they boast to represent, have unleashed multifarious fissiparous tactics to mislead the masses with utter falsehood, create ethnic tension, drive communities against each other, impair the peace and harmony that exist in the East, inflame communal clashes in the East, make it an ungovernable area and thus help infiltraton of the terrorists and nullify the election victory and the sacrifices made by the security forces for liberation of the Province.

These reactonary conspirators have successfully misled the Muslim parliamentarians in the government on the issue of appointing the Chief Minister for the Eastern Province and have pursuaded them to demand that Mr. Hizbollah who joined the UPFA group to contest the Eastern Privince Election as a SLMC breakaway group and have got 3 members of his group (including himself) elected be appointed as the Chief Minister. This is a myopic demand and it could cause serious repercussions for peace and harmony not only in the Eastern Province but all over Sri Lanka and create golden opportunities for the vanquished reactionary elements and the terrorists to regain their lost ground and revive their plans to defeat the govenrment and systematically destroy Sri Lanka.

Eastern Province should never be permitted to emerge as a fountain of communalism and ethnic strife. ? Instead it should be moulded to become the bastion of ethnic harmony, peaceful co-existence, inter-religious amity and an area with people holding the true Sri Lankan identity.
Eastern Province after the election stands as the best panacea to overcome many of the ills facing Sri Lanka, especially for the decades long issues relating to terrorism, alleged discrimination of minorities, demad for a separate territorial entity for the Tamils as the only solution, and alleged human rights violations.? If wisdom prevails in the appointment of a Chief Minister who could address all these issues Sri Lanka will be able to overcome decades of misery its people suffered, and a new chapter could be opened for establishig peace and prosperity in the whole country.
It is not correct to let ethnicity or personal ambitions to reign supreme over the national objectives and the issue should be collectively addressed by everyone in the spirit of true Sri Lankans and for the welfare of the nation as a whole.

If the past Muslim leaders such Sri Marcan Markar, Sir Razik Fareed, Dr.T.B.Jayaha Dr.M.C.M.Kaleel, Dr. Badi-ud-din Mahmoud and Mr. A.C.S. Hameed were alive they would have forseen the folly and the gravity of the demand for appointing Mr. Hizbollah as the Chief Minister.? Even the founder leader of the SLMC Mr. Ashroff was alive, he too would have disagreed with this demand as he lately understood the folly of indulging in communal politics and formed the National Unity Alliance with a Buddhist priest as its Chairman, since he realised that national unity should be predominant over parochial issues.

Conversely, appointng Mr. Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthsn alias Pillaiyan as the Chief Minister of the Province would shatter all myths, claims and allegatons being promoted by the terrorists, and the reactionany NGO vultures for sustaining the flow of their dollar remunerations. Through the appointment of Mr. Chandrakanthan Sri Lanka can proudly assert :

Sri Lanka has succeeded in enticing the terrorist cadres in the Eastern Province to rescind terrorism and embrace democracy by contesting election and getting themselves elected;

Majority of Tamil now live amicably with Sinhalese and Muslim bretheren in the South, in the hill country, as well as in the East;

LTTE terrorists are now confined only to Killinochchi, Mulaithivu districts and parts of Welioya and Mannar

Tamils in the East reject the demand for Eelam and they desire to live amicably with other communities as in the South and in the hill country.

The claim of endorsement given by Tamil for a separate Tamil Homeland in the 1977 General Election, as adopted by the Vadukkodai Resolution, has been revoked by the Eastern Province Tamils through this election.

Eastern Province Tamils desire the Eastern Province to remain as a separrate Province and not as a part merged with the Northern Province.

From the past history of Mr. Hizbollah anyone can observe that he possesses all the vicious racist and somersaulting characteristics of racist Hakeem and he does not stand tall to hold the prestigeous position and anyone can bet that at a crucial time he could betray anyone and look for better pasture. Appointment of Hizbollah would result in dire cosequences which include TMVP considering that their desire for embracing democracy has been thwarted. ? This disillusionment may even tempt them to rejoin the terrorists. ? It also would provide grist to terrorist and NGO propaganda mills that the Sri Lankan government deceive the minorities and discriminate Tamils.
The swearing in of the Chief Minister was scheduled to take place at the time of writing this article. It is reported that it has been postponed and the President was having consultations with the concerned parties to arrive at an amicable solution, and the terrorists have once again made a suicide attack planned to coincide with the scheduled swearing in ceremony, resulting in the death of scores of innocent people.

As the President rightly mentioned in his Oxfored Union speech that “If Sri Lanka fails in its fight against terrorism the world will also failâ€, it is the opportune time now ? for the western world to realise the atrocities being faced by the innocent Sri Lankans in the hands of the “the world’s ruthless terrorist outfitâ€which exports terrorist and suicide technology to the terrorist the world over. ? If the west is sinceerely desirous of eliminating terrorism it should extend their fullest cooperation and assistance to Sri Lanka to wipe out the terrorist menace.

We hope that wisdom would prevail in the selection of the Chief Minister and all concerned parties shed their parochial desires and stand unitedly for the betterment of the Eastern Province and the welfare of the nation. Our objective should be to build a nation devoid of terrorism, racism and other forms of divisions to facilitate the posterity to live in peace and harmony.
