SAM missiles fired from No-Fire-Zone  - Puthukkudiyirippu

Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels fired missiles at two helicopters of the government troops evacuating injured soldiers in the north Wednesday morning, but caused no damage to the helicopters, said the military.

Officials from the Ministry of Defense said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fired surface-to-air-missiles at two Air Force Bell- 212 helicopters engaged in casualty evacuation operations in the northern Puthukkudiyirippu area around 11:00 a.m. local time (0530 GMT).

Air Force Spokesperson Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said the missiles were fired from the government-declared no-fire-zone, but the pilots managed to take the injured soldiers into safety, evading the missile attack.

The incident came as the military say the LTTE has been confined to an area of just 20 sq km in Puthukkudiyiruppu from over 15,000 sq km they held in the north and east when the current military offensive began in 2006.

More than 70,000 people have died in the conflict since the mid-1980s in one of the world's longest civil wars.
