If Russia had realised in time the depth and systemic nature of the aggression and intransigence of the Western capitalist-imperialist system, it would have acted more decisively by preventing or helping to suppress the coup d’état organised by the Americans in Kiev in 2014. By Sugeeswara Senadhira/Daily News
Colombo, October 26: The benefits of Sri Lanka’s foreign policy of neutrality was evident during the recent challenges faced on several fronts. Although it was quite evident during the 30 years of conflict as many countries – Pakistan, China, Russia, United States, Israel and India – came to assist at different times, the success of Sri Lanka’s foreign policy became most prominent during the last three years of difficulties due to the pandemic and economic downturn. In addition to government-to-government development assistance as well as investments, Sri Lanka is also... -Full Story-

Israel, US need to wake up to the new world order: Afghanistan exit, Ukraine war, BRICS:
Saeed Naqvi Courtesy Telegraph India
Instead of being cheerleaders for globalisation being steered by one hegemonic power, the media became the drumbeaters and myth makers for America’s endless wars, particularly the ones after 9/11 which, by sheer repetition, were to impair and, over time, demolish the media’s credibility The singular lack of hospitality experienced by Joe Biden in West Asia is all a part what the US, and Israel, must expect in the altered global order. Who Created Hamas And For What?
By Prof. Rasheen Bappu Courtesy Ceylon Today
US Congressman Dr. Ron Paul of R-Texas, 14th District Vitoria, Freeport in his speech said Israel helped create Hamas to destabilise Arafat who was very powerful at the time. Ron Paul explained the hypocritical approach of the US and Israel regarding the support of Hamas, much like they did for ISIS. “But there is something bitterly ironic in Israel’s support for Fatah against Hamas and it should be a lesson to  everywhere that meddles in other States’ affairs. The sting is more in the title than in the tale!
by Rohana R. Wasala
I was saddened by the unexpectedly rude sarcasm of the apparently perfunctory memorial feature “The Jackson of all trades: A tribute to Jackson Anthony” (The Island/October 20, 2023) penned by Uditha Devapriya about the recently deceased celebrity. In my opinion, the article is hardly worthy of the dead icon, or of the tribute payer, for that matter. The ill chosen satirical tone rings discordant with the reasonably authentic contents of what fair minded readers would have expected to be an engaging eulogy of a generous human being with his trademark eternal smile on his... -Full Story-

Indian Cheap Commercial Slog Pitches Unsuitable to Host International Tournaments
Dilrook Kannangara
Indian pitches are designed for cheap commercial ventures like IPL. These are unsuitable for international tournaments. CWC 2023 has broken batting records for the sole reason that cricket pitches are for slog-cricket and not for professional cricket. Bowlers can’t get any real support from these slog pitches. Good cricketing pitches balance between support for both bowlers and batsmen. Changing the team to suit slog pitches is unwise. Instead, Sri Lanka must stick to its long-term plan to develop a strong cricket team. More importantly, Sri Lankan cricket pitches must not be converted to slog-cricket... -Full Story-

Indian IIT
Sugath Kulatunga
It is good news that the President is keen on establishing a branch of an Indian IIT in Kandy. It appears that Prime Minister Modi has agreed to support the Chennai IIT to launch the project. It is never too late, but the President should not consider that one IIT is the panacea for all the IT backwardness of the country and a magic wand to provide productive employment to all our school leavers. While a workforce with IT skills can act as a magnet for foreign investment the need is for a comprehensive transformation of... -Full Story-

Tilak Gunawardena Scholarship Fund launched by Sri Lanka – Malaysia Business Council
Senaka Weeraratna
A decent man with childlike innocence, he will be remembered by all those who treasured his company and sagacity. I would like to end this tribute to Tilak with a plea to his family and friends to strongly consider reprinting a facsimile edition of the Buddhist Youth magazine originally published in 1969 for general distribution, to keep Tilak’s memory alive. His idealistic writings and his youthful images in photographs all in one document would be hard to find anywhere else. May Tilak attain the Supreme Bliss of Nirvana. Indo-Lanka Accord does not exist & never did
Shenali D Waduge
Sri Lankans are being psychologically trapped into believing the Indo-Lanka Accord is still valid. It is not. It never was. It is not because it violated international norms by being signed under duress thus violating Article 51 & 52 of Vienna Convention. The Accord was never valid because India failed to fulfil the 5 obligations that bound its validity. The Citizens MUST REJECT any claims that Indo-Lanka Accord is valid. How can the nation that trained & armed Sri Lankan Tamil militants since late 1970s draft a peace accord &... -Full Story-

Let us develop Sri Lanka with the IMF Tranche
by Garvin Karunaratne
It is good news that the IMF has agreed to release the second tranche $ 3 billion. I was worried when I read the news of the two specialists that came who voiced that we had not fulfilled all the conditions. However we should be lucky that the IMF decided to release the funds. Now we come to the next problem- how will we disburse the funds. The current model of economic development-that of liberalizing imports, limiting development initiatives to the private sector, confining the public sector that did develop Sri Lanka before... -Full Story-

Theoretical Justification of the Neo Liberal doctrine of the IMF
Sugath Kulatunga
When the Mont Pelerin Society first met, in 1947, its political project did not have a name. But it knew where it was going. The society's founder, Friedrich von Hayek, remarked that the battle for ideas would take at least a generation to win, but he knew that his intellectual army would attract powerful backers. Its philosophy, which later came to be known as neoliberalism, accorded with the interests of the ultra-rich, so the ultra-rich would pay for it. Neoliberalism claims that we are best served by maximum market freedom and minimum intervention by... -Full Story-
