Sir:
Tamil-Canadians are planning to return to Parliament Hill today you said. And, “this time the focus of their protest is to urge the Canadian government to demand an independent probe into the alleged human rights abuses committed by the Sri Lankan Army against Tamil people during the final clashes of the long-running civil war.
I know they are smarting having seen their Tamil Tigers been wipe out; the most ruthless terrorist group in the world that haemorrhaged that island nation for the past 30 years with killings, assassinations and maiming civilians for life for not letting them get their way to create their mono-ethnic, racist , state, Tamil Eelam.
I am afraid, the Canadian Government did encourage this demonstration having been one of the mainly 12 European countries with a population of 0.5 billion who voted for the UN Human Rights Council resolution to bring Sri Lanka to the War Crimes Court for alleged war crimes and, 29 Eastern bloc countries with a population of 4 billion voted against it. Unfortunately this vote has certainly dampened any enthusiasm by developing countries to fight terrorism which is usually the crucible of the horror cults which have tentacles reaching far out to western countries and sometimes reaching Canada. And, of course, the Tamil-Canadians were given a another shot in their arms to demonstrate, when Canada refused to congratulate Sri Lanka for this enormous historic win over Tamil Tigers and wiping out terrorism from this country, while we are helping Afghanistan with our soldiers to wipe out Taliban terrorism. I have failed to understand this hypocrisy nor its logic.
If Canada wishes to let the Tamil-Canadians massage their foreign policy on Sri Lanka, then so be it. But the President of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa who is now popular amongst the citizens of the country, including the 280,000 Tamil civilians who were liberated by his Armed Forces from the Tamil Tigers who were kept hostage by the Tamil Tigers as a human shield said, that he will proudly go to the gallows, having saved his country and people from the most ruthless Tamil terrorist group in the world which the western countries fed, natured and provided oxygen for its survival. And, especially for having taken the fear out of the lives of his people who made the sign of the cross or placed their palms together in prayer each morning before they got on to a bus or train wanting to reach their destination in one piece without being blown to smithereens by a Tamil Tiger bomb or a claymore mine.
I doff my hat to this courageous politician, who also was a very active Human Rights lawyer before he took up politics.
