The cargo shop “Captain Ali” which was allegedly transporting some goods belonging to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been seized by the Sri Lanka Navy.

The ship was seized about 100 nautical miles off Sri Lanka’s Western coast .

Naval Media Spokesman & Special Boat Squadron Director Capt. D.K.P. Dassanayake said, ” the vessel was seized about 100 nautical miles off the Western coast at about 4.00 am. Thursday, June 4 2009″

The Navy further said it was being escorted to the coast for further investigation.

According naval sources the Navy had kept surveillance on the cargo being transported to Sri Lanka illegally since the contraband started its journey from the United Kingdom. The ship then transported the cargo from the ship “Valan Gamam” but transferred the goods to the ship called “Captain Ali” at a Paris harbour. The Sri Lanka Navy reportedly kept a vigil until the ship entered Sri Lanka’s territorial waters.
