Azerbaijan’s Trend News Agency said at the next Presidential election after November this year in Sri Lanka , President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s position will be very unassailable.

“Rajapakse currently enjoys an unassailable position on the strength of his unprecedented victory over Tamil Tiger rebels,”the news agency said.

The item published by the news agency cited the following reason for President Rajapaksa’s strong position in Sri Lanka’s polity: ” Rajapakse was able to win a civil war between the government troops and the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in the last three years, ending the rebels’ 30-year-old armed campaign to carve out an independent Tamil homeland in the north and east for the minority Tamils.”

The news agency said Opposition United National Party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe will be putting forward a coalition of political parties and civili society groups against Rajapaksa.

The news agency quoted him as saying at a local government election at Wellawaya they would also discuss the rapid development plan Rajapaksa is attempting to implement.

The news agency said the Sri Lankan President , elected in 2005 , is said to be considering a move to call a snap Presidential election after November.
