President Mahinda Rajapaksa reminding the people that his government would not give in to the conspirators against the country reminded they stood firm against pressure made on the government by the powerful to give in to the enemy even moments before they fell.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa said yesterday addressing Matara District electoral heads and organizers of the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party that he was not prepared to betray the supreme freedom won by the sacrifice of 26,000 gallant soldiers by betraying the country to conspirators within and without the country.

Referring to the final moments before the enemy was defeated the President said, ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-So many phone calls were made to give up the final victory by the powerful. So much pressure on the government was applied to give in to the enemy even at the final momentƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, but the government stood firm.

Addressing the Matara leaders in Colombo, however much freedom he has won for the people of Sri Lanka the President said he personally cannot enjoy the freedom , in an obvious reference to the security restrictions imposed on him.(The security of the President has been strengthened after it was revealed that there had been a plot to kill him during a provincial election campaign in Badulla)

He said he is duty bound to resettle all the innocent IDPƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s as soon as their original villages have been made safe for them.

In an obvious reference to the ceasefire agreement Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe signed when he was Prime Minister the President said for his own comfort and sense of security he had given over the whole country to the enemy on a signed document.

He said he personally know the anxiety gone through by the relatives of the soldiers as he himself had gone through the same kind of anxiety during the time when his brother Gotabhaya was fighting in Vadamarachchi years ago. His mother , brothers and he were reciting Seth Kavi to invoke blessings on him. Together they were holding Bodhi Poojas to protect him. So, he could imagine the worries and anxieties undergone by the relatives of the soldiers during the war.

Addressing the Hambantota District electoral representatives separately the President severely criticised the Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe. He said today, he did not see an opposition leader leading the opposition in the parliament but an opposition leader opposing the country.

He was, in fact, was betraying the country. The Opposition Leader, the President said, was calling upon foreign governments not to allow the GSP Plus be extended and the IMF loan be not granted.
