International Film Festival begins tomorrow in the City

Guwahati: The prime city of Northeast will host an important international film festival starting from tomorrow. Organized by Cine Arts Society, Assam (CineASA) for the second consecutive year, the weeklong Guwahati festival will showcase nearly 40 films from international arena for the film goers of the region.

The Second CineASA Guwahati International Film Festival 2010 will be inaugurated on January 18 by the Assam Governor JB Patnaik. The Sri Lankan film ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Akasha KusumƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ will be screened as the inaugural film. The director of the movie, an eminent filmmaker from the island nation, Prasanna Vithange will grace the inaugural session, disclosed Bitopan Barbora, on behalf of the organizing committee, in a press meet today.

Other important movies, to be screened in different venues including Rabindra Bhawan, Gauhati University, IIT Guwahati, Janokee Panjabari, include film works by Pedro Almodover, Christian Mungio, Jean Luc Godard, Francois Troufaut, Mahsin Makhmalbaf, Kiarostemi, Kim Ki Duk etc.

It will also have a retrospective section comprising the films by Pedro Almodovar, a tribute section for film works by Kim Ki Duk and a focus section for the movies by Mahsin Makhmalbaf, Samira Makhmalbaf, Mazid Mazidi, Abbas Kiarostemi and Bahman Ghobadi, informed the organizer.

A package of Asian films which had won awards in Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Locarno, Pusan, London festival will also be screened.

In another important section, a competition for short films under the Northeast Shots is organized, where three awards will be offered to the film personalities. Like the earlier festival, three discussions will be organized during the festival. The themes of the discussions are Asian Cinema and its Salient Features, Future Roadmap for Cinema on Northeast India, New Avenues in Financing Short and Feature Film Projects.
