The UK Green Party: Promoters of International Terrorism?

The LTTE, categorised by the FBI as the ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-the most ruthless terrorist organization in the worldƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚, has another supporter in the European Union Parliament.

Step forward Jean Lambert, Green Party MEP (Member of European Parliament) for London and a member of the its Human Rights Sub-Committee and Delegation to South Asia (SAARC).

Jean petitioned for a ceasefire during the final battles in Northern Sri Lanka as the LTTE held 100,000+ civilians hostage as protection against the advancing Sri Lanka Army. She was unaware that the LTTE had not released any civilians during previous ceasefires, initiated by the Sri Lanka Army to let civilians escape the combat zone.

On Saturday 2nd May 2009, she spoke movingly at the Sivan Kovil Temple in a meeting organized by the British Tamils Forum (BTF). The meeting supported calls for a ceasefire in Northern Sri Lanka and highlighted the desperate situation of the Tamil civilians in the war-zone. Neither the petition nor the meeting made any mention of the LTTEƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s culpability in holding civilians against their wishes in the combat zone.

Jean Lambert has offices and staff in London and Brussels. Despite having these resources at her command, she missed certain basic facts about the Sivan Kovil or the BTF.

The Sivan Kovil Temple is an LTTE controlled Hindu temple. In May 2008, the templeƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s pro-LTTE trustees cancelled a memorial event for Mrs Maheswary Velutham (an adviser to an anti-LTTE political party) murdered by the LTTE in Jaffna, Sri Lanka in May 2008.

The BTF is the LTTEƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s front organization in the UK. In July 2008, The BTF organized a tribute (Pongu Thamil) to the Black Tigers ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” the LTTEƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s elite corp of suicide bombers ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢¢”š¬…” in London.

Despite reams of allegations of human rights abuses against the Sri Lankan government, 5,000 miles away, Jean Lambert practices an ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”ask me no questions and IƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ll you no liesƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ policy about LTTEƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s activities and sympathisers in London.

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”¹…”Both sides are to blameƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ is JeanƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s preferred response to the question of whom to support in Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s war against separatist terrorism.

Savour these fine sentiments from Jean Lambert:

ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ…-We must not lose sight of the fact that eternal vigilance is indeed the price of liberty. At a time when human rights and democratic development hang in the balance in so many countries, the media, politicians and citizens have a duty to recognise that we owe our security and democracy in large part to those fighting for and defending freedom of the press.ƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ”š‚

She failed note that most implacable enemy of human rights and democratic development is not the imperfect Government of Sri Lanka, but the perfectly formed racist terrorists, the LTTE.

Whilst the Sri Lankan government may be culpable in misdeeds against the press in Sri Lanka, the LTTEƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s treatment of itsƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢ press critics miraculously escape JeanƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s censure. DBS Jeyraj, a well-respected Tamil journalist living in exile in Canada, had his legs broken by LTTE thugs for daring to criticize the terror group. Sinna Bala, a Tamil journalist critical of the LTTE, was murdered in Colombo by the LTTE. No words of condemnation issued from Jean about these LTTE-inspired attacks on journalists and press freedom.

ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In 2004, the EU arrested Hans-Martin Tillack, a German journalist who dared to publish details of corrupt practices in the EUƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s own anti-fraud organization. They also demanded TillackƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s list of contacts. This shocking attack on press freedom in the heart of civilized Europe, from whom Sri Lanka has so much to learn, appears to have escaped Jean LambertƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s penetrating gaze.

Until the SAARCƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s membership is amended to remove pro-LTTE partisans like Jean Lambert, their pronouncements on the human rights situation in Sri Lanka must be treated with the contempt they deserve.
