Former Army Chief Fonseka’s Desperate Attempt To Discredit The Government Exposes His Own Mendacity

It needs to be put into perspective objectively that Sri Lanka’s ex-army chiefƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ recently threatening to “expose” any war crimes committed during the end of the country’s civil war last year and said he would go “out of his way” to assist with a probe,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  is a justificationof the charges of treason now being brought against him whichƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ now becomes even more plausible as the man is veritably putting his own neck into the noose and incriminating himself as he was the man in charge of military operations in a military sense rather than administrative which role belonged to the President and if he is suggesting that he would go out of his way to expose what he mostly directed ~as war crimes~ such a statement indicatesƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ the desperation the former Military Chief must be in where the noose around his neck seems to be getting tighter by his own doing!
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
In making a statement of such obstreperous irresponsibility indicative of his current state of mind probably best described asƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ confused, angryƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  and ruminating given his circumstances of incarcerationƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ he is perhaps attempting to put the Government of Sri Lanka in a spot relative to world opinion which has to be viewed objectively and veritably trashed.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
It seems very easy for news sources around the globe to pick up such incriminating opinions and splash them in the media without first delving into the circumstances under which Fonseka was apprehended and indicted for crimes against his countryƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ~charges presented as those of a treasonous nature.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Hence the liabilities which go with the negative publicity for a Sovereign Nation with hardly a semblance of truth, ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ no real mitigating factors or tangible evidence beyond the rumblings of anti Government elements such as the residual remnants of former Tamil Tiger terrorist scattered around the globe and of course the visible frustrations of an incarcerated former General, rest with the publishers of such exaggerated broadcastsƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ who probably need to rethink about presentations that carry misleading informationƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  which could be detrimental to the well being of Sri Lanka!Particularly with respect to Foreign aid and co-operation.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Towards Fonseka’s role in all this it needs to be said that bold accusations against the President’s sibling and Defence Secretary Gotobhaya RajapakshaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ of ordering the execution of surrendering rebels in the final stages of fighting while having the nerve to pass on the liabilities of his own actions according to classified sources which were ruthless and even contravening the Geneva Convention,ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ towards the Defense Secretary is totally unacceptable as it was he himself directing operations on the ground and needs to be made accountable for! Hence Fmr. Gen.Fonseka’s statement to the mediaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ (quote)” “If there is any international investigation, I will fully support that.” evokes laughter as the first peice of information the international investigation if any will find is his own role in the operation which attests to autocracy and ruthlessly self motivated based upon his personal wrath against the Tamil Tigers who tried to assassinate him unsuccesfully and the people he beleived supported them.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
On the part of Defence Secretary Rajapaksha who has been accurately analytical as always in his conclusions whether militarily or administratively and relative to the Fonseka accusations who has said that it is probably coerced by international involvement by the many anti Government sources attempting to discredit the GOSL while using Fonseka as a pawn he has probably ” hit the nail right on the head!”
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ In response to the Fonseka allegatons he has also said (being quoted here)” that former Army Commander General Fonseka, in the run-up to January 26 presidential election, alleged the Army had executed LTTE cadres, who gave themselves up on the Vanni front although Fonseka had subsequently said that the Army did not massacre surrendering LTTE cadres, though being ordered by me, it paved the way for international intervention.” (end quote )surely a contradiction on the part of Fonseka portraying his duplicity.
ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚
Emphasizing the greater implications of the Fonseka ‘deposition’ to the world media, Defence Secretary Rajapaksa assertedƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ that “those bent on destabilizing the country would now exploit FonsekaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s parliamentary privileges to fast track their sinister campaign. Now that terrorists no longer retained a conventional fighting capability, the LTTE rump would strive to isolate the country, he said. The fastest way to achieve their goal was to use MP Sarath Fonseka to justify their baseless allegations. He has further emphasized that anyone throwing his or her weight behind an anti-Sri Lanka conspiracy would be considered a traitor and people should be naƒÆ’†’ƒ”š‚¯ve to believe such behavior could be tolerated.

Responding to a query by The Island, The Defence Secretary hasƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚ said that the conclusion of the war last year had brought a sense of relief to all communities. Although petty minded politicians may not realize the ground situation as yet, in the absence of the LTTE factor, the Opposition would be powerless, he said. The bottom line is that the Opposition may not have an issue big enough to exploit as a rallying point except unsubstantiated war crimes charges.

During the war, interested parties, including the media, had accused the Navy and Air Force, too, of indiscriminate attacks on civilians and in some instances Indian fishermen. Had they bothered to follow the media coverage of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, they would accept Sri LankaƒÆ’‚¢ƒ¢-¡‚¬ƒ¢-¾‚¢s extraordinary efforts to minimize civilian loss of life. He said that even at the height of the war on the Vanni front, the ICRC was allowed to evacuate the wounded out of LTTE-held territory. He said that the government could have finished off the LTTE in an indiscriminately ruthless manner had it chosen to which was not the case! and attest to the bias and baseless falsifications in the Fonseka statement!

Brilliant insight Sunil, grateful thanks. Fonseka does not seem to have any grey cells left, he himself tightening the the noose round his neck.

  2. Leelawardena Says:

First let us thank Sunil Kumar for writing a timely writeup.

While the war raged on, I have written many a comments to various International papers to convey that both President Rajapakse and General Fonseka are patriots with equal fervour. In many a comment I have offered the General my greatest admiration for beating LTTE and killing all its leaders, en-masse. What a folly has it turn to be. I feel bad and ashamed housand times a day for making such a stupid conclusion.

Though I suspected the motives of the General when he became the common candidate against President Rajapakse, I did not criticize his decision at the time. But when he (SF) started to castigate our war heroes as ‘war criminals’ I immediately knew he is a dangerous man. And I pointed my writing against him everywhere I could. I started to portray the General as a traitor in all my comments to local as well as International papers. I have noticed so many other patriots doing the same. I must have written literally hundreds of comments to ‘the Sunday Leader’ against this man under the name ‘Leela’.

I beg all able nationalists to get together and form an association to oppose and expose the no 1 living traitor of this country – Sarath Fonseka as soon as possible.

  3. anura seneviratna Says:

No need to feel bad and ashamed. We all immensely respected and admired the noble deeds of the then Army Commander on behalf of the Nation & Country. We judge people purely on actions and thoughts not the physical being – so we now wholly oppose his traitorus deeds and thoughts. It is a splendid idea and quite timely to oppose him in an organised manner. Best Wishes.

  4. Nihal Fernando Says:

Now, Ranil who made a clean mockery out of ex-General SF during the war, says Sri Lanka can get GSP+ if the GoSL can release him from the custody. If it is true before Ranil came to know about it from the EU, Hon. President MR should have come to know it. There are charges against SF that are being investigated. There is legal battle going on. How can EU makes such bargain pleas on behalf of a traitor who tries to betray the whole country. Is this some kind of a bartering, to get GSP+ release GSP- (Gen. Sarath Ponseka) ?

  5. aravinda Says:

Mr.Fonseka, you had your 15 minutes of fame, move over, and let the elected party run Sri Lanka. Your hate, anger, venom against the man who trusted you shows what a little man you are. Good riddence of bad rubbish.

  6. jay-ran Says:

Its a good suggestion indeed by Leela to have an Organisation to condemn and expose the hatread shown by the ex General.
During the presindential elections period, all his speaches were well published on internet and newcasts, videos and all the speaches were full of low level standard language.I too feel ahamed of myself to have praised SF for his duties as the AC, but only now we see the REAL NATURE OF THIS SERPENT.This man was made the AC Gotabhaya against wishes of former ACs and President too. When hearing these comments full of HATREAD AND JEOLOSY, we can imagine WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPNED IF THIS MAN WON THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS(But the Gods above R not that fools & enlightened the general massess with correct decission)???

  7. Andare Says:

We think that Sarath Fonseka may be suffering from Post War Trauma to have acted & act as he does. He was brought fresh from the battle field to contest elections – we have never heard of such an event in other countries. SF was also seriously injured by an ltte suicide bomber. Who were the people who thrust him forward into the Presidential Elections when he was still in ‘battle mode’ against the ltte & politically naive as well ?

Going against our own leading people is not a good thing and will only help the enemies of this Nation who seek to ‘divide & rule’. It was an unethical act by those who thrust SF forward in desperation to contest the Presidential Elections, whatever his misplaced ambitions were. Now the entire Nation is paying for this error. A politically naive SF has been manipulated & used, much to our disgust. A group should be formed to probe as to how SF was manipulated & the facts exposed – then may be he would be enlightened on the events & stop acting against GoSL. Please handle this problem with wisdom.

  8. A. Sooriarachi Says:

HELP HIM PLEASE. Like Andare has rightly pointed out Sarath Fonseka must be suffering from Post War Trauma to issue such childish statements incriminating himself as the Commander of Army. During the war he quite proudly issued statements giving numbers of terrorists killed each day. Today the bankrupt enemies of SriLanka are clamouring to cling on to blow up the wild allegations thrown around by the General, vilifying the Government and the nation. His enemies who rediculed him for his war effort describing him as not fit to lead the Salvation Army are cunningly appearing as his “saviours” and egging him on to cause more and more damage to the ones who eliminated the terrorists along with him. General Fonseka was the right man to lead the Army at the time and he did a great job for which the nation should be grateful for ever. He lead the anihilation of the brutal terrorists who refused to surrender, believing that their powerful foreign personalities and Human Rights Groups, releasing bogus statements almost on a daily basis favourable to the terrorists, would suffice to force President Rajapakse to cave in and stop the war. I think the Govt should provide the General with treatment to overcome his post war trauma condition, if he is suffering from it, and thereby rehabilitate him to regain his esteemed position as a great son of SriLanka, rather than let the enemies of the country use him to destroy the good name of SriLanka.

  9. orpheusperera Says:

Definitely, Former General is suffering from Post war Trauma. He thought he should be the only hero who saved the country. Now he is saying he was not in the country during the final stages of the war and someone else has committed war crimes. The way he spoke during the Presidential election campaign proved that he was insane, filled with rage. One mistake Gota made was, not sending SF for psychological treatments immediately after the war. Now he needs a psychiatrist.
Our problem now is LTTE supporters in the west will be happy to exploit the mental condition of Sarath Fonseka to meet their ends. It is a commonly known fact that in the USA lots of soldiers who return from the war had become psychotics and some of them were used by the state and CIA as assassinators.
Whatever SF says against the president and his brother, they are load of rubbish, uttered by a man with DELUSIONS. They could be not true for all rational Sri Lankans, but true for Sarath Fonseka and the west and the LTTE, who are waiting to destabilize and divide the country.
