Hung British Parliament & Potential Consequences for Sri Lanka

Mother of Parliaments is in Gallows!ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Britain is looking at a Hung Parliament, either with a Political Partnership or a Brave Minority Government.

In either case the “King-maker” Liberal Democratic Party are going for the kill with their demands for Reform and a heavy list of concessions. Either the Conservatives or the Labour, whoever wins the Lib-Dem “open-marriage” will have internal rebellion within the Party and its supporters.

Will the Lib-Dems get a Portfolio with a number such as 11, 12, or the 666 (Devil’s Plate)?

Both Conservatives and Labour are fuly aware that by giving way to Proportional Representation, will spell the end of a long honeymoon in monopolising the Front Benches in the House of Commons.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  Very likely the Lib-Dems will be an eternal pain in the neck for both Tory and Labour.

Now comes the Tamil Factor!

The new government on 2010, in any shape or form has a very short life.

The Labour grandees are after Gordon Brown’s throat.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  The knives are all ready, like in a Shakespearean Drama. It will not be just one Brutus. It might be most of the Kings men in their (Indian owned) Tata-Jaguars and Tata-Range Rovers.

The Lib-Dems might talk with Labour, but only without Gordon Brown. Even if the Lib-Dems join forces with the Tory Party, a No Confidence motion on Immigration, or on EU will bring the government down.

If Labour were to court Lib-Dems, the Gordon Brown’s head will roll. The most probable candidate to lead Labour, might be David “Tamil-Tiger” Milliband. Still even with a Milliband led Labour-Lib-Dem coalition, its a matter of time when the House of Cards, with a wafer-thin majority, will come crumbling down.

Then comes an election, sooner than one thinks.

The three-party fight, on the same landscape, will become a two-party race, with Lib-Dems being high-lighted as a rejection factor of 73% in the earlier election.

Both Tory and Labour will cry out to the electorate to give either a clear mandate, discounting the Lib-Dems as a “spoilt-kid”, a Loser. Even if the Lib-Dems get another few seats, the equation will not change.

In several constituencies, the Tamil DiasporaƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  has a reasonable clout, which the two major parties will court with unashamed pleas and favours.

This will place the Tamil Tiger LTTE remnants now in the form of Political garb, in a respectable position as a Political Animal.

Although Sri Lanka should not get involved in the British political drama, the Sri Lanka Ministry of External Affairs along with the Ministry of Information should ramp-up a viable Press & Public Relations programme using an aggressive professional PR company to face possible back-lash.

Currently, the political publicity machinery under President Rajapaksa is giving a high profile to the activity of the President.ƒÆ’-¡ƒ”š‚  This activity now must be complemented by promoting a Team Effort in the Government, to demonstrate a wider stronger base.

Sri Lanka should be promoted as a Paradise of Democracy, Equality, an Island Resort for Investment, Strategic Maritime Position, an equally sought after Holiday destination.

The policies of the government in rehabilitating the Tamil refugees have created a positive image. President has shown that he is fair to all citizens, irrespective of Religion, Race, Ethnicity and even his opposition is treated in a civilized manner.

Now the Government of Sri Lanka should take immediate steps to prevent the cold, damp, draught from the British electoral Easterly winds, in creating a “cramp” on the neck of the SLG.

Incidentally, the current international policy of strengthening multi-lateral strategic relationships with Iran, Libya, Pakistan, China, Russia, are a positive buffer against the LTTE-related interference from certain Western regimes.
